Why This Album Matters
The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge, released in 2005, transcends the idea of a simple soundtrack to become a landmark in the Brazilian musician's solo discography. The album features a collection of David Bowie songs, reinterpreted in Portuguese with minimalist guitar and vocal arrangements, originally recorded for the film "A Vida Marinha com Steve Zissou", in which Seu Jorge also acted. This cultural and stylistic fusion reinvented Bowie's glam rock classics through the lens of Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), with a strong influence of bossa nova and folk. What makes this work particularly notable is Seu Jorge's ability to strip back the original compositions, revealing a "new layer of beauty" which David Bowie himself admitted he had not perceived in his own songs before these versions. The Brazilian artist's sensitivity in translating and adapting the lyrics, maintaining the melodic essence while imprinting an acoustic and intimate sound, gives the album a unique and timeless character, making it more than a tribute: a true artistic reinterpretation.
Context
Before The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions, Seu Jorge had already achieved significant recognition in both cinema and music. He gained prominence as an actor in "Cidade de Deus" (2002), as Mané Galinha, and later as Pelé dos Santos in "A Vida Marinha com Steve Zissou" (2004), a film that served as a catalyst for this musical project. In his solo career, the album succeeded the acclaimed Carolina (2003) and Cru (2004), the latter recorded in France, showcasing his growing international projection. Considered a renovator of Brazilian pop samba, Seu Jorge had already demonstrated in his previous works the versatility and depth that would lead him to this unusual and fruitful encounter with David Bowie's oeuvre.
Recording
The recording sessions for the album The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions took place at Forum Music Village, in Rome, Italy, between 2004 and 2005. Production was handled by Wes Anderson, director of the film "A Vida Marinha com Steve Zissou", and Randall Poster, musical supervisor for the cinematic work, ensuring that the versions aligned with the unique aesthetic of the feature film. Although five of the covers had already been included in the film's original soundtrack, they were re-recorded for this album, which also featured seven new songs. The recording approach prioritised simplicity, centred on Seu Jorge's distinctive voice and his classical guitar, with minimalist production that enhances the intimacy and melody of the compositions.
Songs
The album is composed of thirteen reinterpretations of David Bowie songs, plus one original track, "Team Zissou", written by Seu Jorge. The adaptations into Portuguese are not literal, with Seu Jorge opting to maintain the original melodies and style, but frequently altering the lyrics to create new narratives and resonances in Portuguese. Among the tracks, reinterpretations of classics such as "Rebel Rebel", which gains an unexpected languidness, and "Changes", transformed into a soulful ballad, stand out. The version of "Starman", known as "Astronauta de Mármore", is an exception whose Portuguese lyrics were adapted by Carlos Stein and Sady Homrich. Seu Jorge's ability to distil the essence of Bowie's songs, such as in a "Queen Bitch" that dispenses with the original androgyny, demonstrates a profound understanding and respect for the material, while reimagining it in a unique way.
Legacy
The album's critical reception was mixed, with "O Estado de S. Paulo" classifying it as "pleasant to listen to, irritating when paying attention to the lyrics", while others, such as AllMusic, gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. However, the most significant endorsement came from David Bowie himself, who praised Seu Jorge's versions, stating that without them, he would never have perceived a "new degree of beauty" in his own compositions. The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions consolidated itself as a project of lasting impact. It became an essential part of Seu Jorge's live shows, culminating in a world tour in tribute to David Bowie, which began in 2016. This singular project is widely recognised for having introduced Bowie's work to new generations and audiences, especially in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries, and also beyond them, achieving 'cult success' status and being fundamental in the Brazilian artist's trajectory.
