Why This Album Matters

Released in 1977, Águia Não Come Mosca is the second album by Azymuth, the Rio de Janeiro band famous for its unmistakable sound. The trio, composed of José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros, and Ivan Conti, defines their style as "samba doido", a vibrant fusion of samba, funk, and jazz. This particular work highlighted the group's originality, consolidating their musical identity.

Context

Before Águia Não Come Mosca, Azymuth had already established a reputation as studio musicians, accompanying major names in Brazilian music since 1968. Officially formed in 1973, the trio achieved national success with their debut album, Azimüth, from 1975, propelled by tracks such as "Linha do Horizonte" and "Melô da Cuíca", which were included in soap opera soundtracks.

Songs

One of the album's most prominent songs is "Voo sobre o Horizonte", which gained enormous popularity after being included in the soundtrack of the soap opera Locomotivas.

Legacy

Águia Não Come Mosca achieved good sales, benefiting from the success of "Voo sobre o Horizonte" on radio and television. The group's unique style, evident on this album, captured the attention of Claude Nobs, director of the Montreux Jazz Festival, resulting in an invitation for Azymuth to perform at the 1977 edition, making them the first Brazilian band to participate in the renowned festival. The positive reception of the Montreux performance culminated in an American tour and, subsequently, in the signing of a contract with Milestone Records, an imprint of Fantasy Records, marking the beginning of Azymuth's successful international career.
