Why This Album Matters

Released in 2019, O Futuro Não Demora quickly solidified its place as a milestone in BaianaSystem's trajectory and in contemporary Brazilian music. The album represents the evolution of a sound that uniquely blends the Bahian guitar and ancestral rhythms of Salvador with the vanguard of dub and global electronic music. The work transcends the simple fusion of genres, proposing an immersive sonic experience that reflects on social and philosophical themes with rare depth.

Context

Before O Futuro Não Demora, BaianaSystem had already paved its way as one of Brazil's most innovative bands. Formed in 2007, the group released its debut album in 2010, followed by Duas Cidades in 2016, which received acclaim and established them as a relevant force in the music scene, including the song "Playsom" being featured as the soundtrack for the FIFA 16 video game. Their proposal from the outset was to merge the Bahian guitar, an iconic instrument of Salvador's carnival, with the aesthetic of Jamaican sound systems, creating a sonic language that dialogues between the traditional and the modern, the local and the global.

Recording

The conception of O Futuro Não Demora was a process of deep immersion and research. The group isolated themselves on Ilha de Itaparica, in Baía de Todos-os-Santos, seeking an intrinsic connection with ancestry and natural elements, moving away from Salvador's urban atmosphere. This experience was fundamental to the album's conceptual structure, which is divided into two sides: the "Lado Água" (Water Side), characterised by more melodic and organic sounds, and the "Lado Fogo" (Fire Side), with a more energetic and electronic feel, a metaphor for a cyclical journey of renewal. Musical production was handled by the experienced Daniel Ganjaman, a long-time collaborator of BaianaSystem, who co-produced the album with the band. The album is enriched by significant special guest appearances, such as French singer Manu Chao, rapper BNegão, Curumin, Edgar and the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, as well as Lazzo Matumbi, Vandal and the Samba de Lata de Tijuaçu. This collaboration further expanded the work's sonic and thematic horizons, with the mixing of tracks like "Navio" by Adrian Sherwood, a renowned British producer.

Songs

The 13-track repertoire of O Futuro Não Demora unfolds a complex and cohesive narrative, with a guiding thread that manifests from the opening track "Água" to the closing track "Fogo". The opening track, "Água", for example, is permeated by the influence of Ijexá and the brass of the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, with references to capoeira Angola and even Tom Jobim. The song "Bola de Cristal" reflects on the emergence of humankind and civilisational violence, with Russo Passapusso drawing parallels between the past and the present. Tracks such as "Sulamericano", in collaboration with Manu Chao, address issues of Latin American territory and identity, while "Navio" bridges Brazilian samba-reggae and dub production, recalling the historical connection between Brazil and Europe. The album's diversity is expressed in the more organic moments of the "Lado Água" and the electronic and percussive intensity of the "Lado Fogo", with "Melô do Centro da Terra" marking the conceptual turning point. The lyrics, charged with social messages and hope, invite reflection on the future and the power of change, as in "Você tem poder para mudar o mundo", which becomes one of the work's central themes.

Legacy

The repercussions of O Futuro Não Demora were immediate and global, solidifying BaianaSystem's position in the music scene. The album was acclaimed by specialised critics, featuring in various 'best of the year' lists and receiving praise from outlets such as G1, which described it as a work of "inventive and high-pressure music", and the Omelete portal, which highlighted its connection between Bahian ancestry and the global future. International recognition came with a win at the 2019 Latin Grammy Awards in the Best Rock or Alternative Music Album in Portuguese Language category. This success propelled BaianaSystem's first major tour across Asia and Europe, culminating in an acclaimed performance at the prestigious Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, which led to the release of an exclusive CD edition of the album on the Japanese market. The tour extended through countries such as Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and Denmark, bringing the visual and sonic aesthetic of the "Navio Pirata" to various European festivals, proving the band's resonance beyond Brazilian borders.
