Why This Album Matters

Alucinação is the second studio album by the Ceará-born singer and songwriter Belchior, released in 1976 on the Philips label by PolyGram. It quickly became a landmark in Brazilian discography, driven by iconic songs such as "Apenas um Rapaz Latino-Americano", "Como Nossos Pais", and "Velha Roupa Colorida". Its essence, as Belchior explained, lies in the idea that "living is more important than thinking about life", a form of absolute delirium that permeates the entire work. The work stands out for its solid sound base, which skilfully moves between blues, country, baião, and rock, creating a diverse musical tapestry. The lyrics are another strong point, with extensive narratives that, according to contemporary critics, recall the style of Bob Dylan, abandoning the influence of concretist poetry and presenting an authentic and innovative voice in MPB.

Recording

The production of the album Alucinação was overseen by Marco Mazzola, who also acted as mixing engineer. Ary Carvalhaes was the recording engineer, with Paulo Sérgio (Chocô) as recording assistant and Rafael Azulay as studio assistant. Editing was carried out by Jairo Gualberto, and mastering by Joaquim Figueira. The album cover features a photo of Belchior taken by Januário Garcia, captured at an angle that the photographer himself described as without a specific reason. The colour and light effects in the image were created using the solarisation technique, lending a distinctive visual appeal to the work.

Songs

Alucinação is widely recognised for its successful songs that became anthems, such as "Apenas um Rapaz Latino-Americano", "Como Nossos Pais", and "Velha Roupa Colorida", which quickly established the singer. The album's lyrics are notable for their narrative nature and length, moving away from concretist poetry and approaching the style of Bob Dylan, as pointed out by contemporary critics. Across its ten tracks, Belchior distils his anxieties and observations on life. He recounts the shock of the big city and the decline of the hippie dream, all permeated by a tone of irony and a certain bitterness, characteristics that mark his profound and reflective lyrical style. The album's sound base is eclectic, blending blues, country, baião, and rock.

Legacy

Alucinação was an enormous success from its release, selling thirty thousand copies in just one month and surpassing the half a million mark in total, which established him as a mass idol. Critical reception was varied but predominantly positive: Renato de Moraes, from Folha de S.Paulo, praised the album's novelty, its narrative lyrics in the style of Bob Dylan, and its solid sound base encompassing blues, country, baião, and rock. Although Sérgio Cabral, from O Globo, criticised Belchior's supposed fixation with the "new" and considered the album a "waste of talent", Nelson Motta, also from O Globo, vehemently disagreed, praising Belchior's exploration of the meanings of "new", Marco Mazzola's production, and the musicians' performance. The album is frequently described as revolutionary within MPB. Its impact resonates across generations: radio host and researcher Josely Teixeira Carlos states that the album "summarises the feeling of an entire Brazilian generation, from the interior amidst the big city". The newspaper O Globo reinforced that the work expresses "the urgency of young Brazilians caught between state violence and the end of dreams of freedom". O Correio 24 Horas classified Alucinação as an "instant classic that traversed generations", and Veja magazine considers it "the fundamental album" in Belchior's career, steeped in disillusionment and with "Como Nossos Pais" achieving even greater prominence in the voice of Elis Regina.
