1982

Why This Album Matters
Released in 1982, As Aventuras da Blitz is the debut album that catapulted the Rio de Janeiro band Blitz to stardom, redefining the aesthetic of Brazilian music and inaugurating a new era in the national entertainment landscape. The album stands out for its vibrant blend of references, combining reggae, pop, Jovem Guarda, humour, and new wave elements, all wrapped in an infectious and irreverent sound. With Evandro Mesquita's unmistakable charisma on vocals and the striking energy of backing vocalists Fernanda Abreu and Márcia Bulcão, the album brought a breath of fresh air to Brazilian music, moving away from conventions and embracing an unadorned and theatrical language. It was a work that not only generated tremendous success but also opened the doors of the phonographic industry to emergent Brazilian rock, becoming an iconic cultural landmark of the 1980s.
Blitz transformed Brazilian rock with the release of the single "Você Não Soube Me Amar", followed by their first LP, As Aventuras da Blitz. The group offered an innovative language, bringing the descriptive lyrical construction of comic books.

Context
The release of As Aventuras da Blitz occurred in a period of political and cultural transition in Brazil, in the early 1980s. The country was experiencing the 'abertura' (opening) process of the military dictatorship, a moment of effervescence that allowed the return of political exiles and the flourishing of new artistic expressions. Against this backdrop, Blitz emerged in Rio de Janeiro in 1981, originating from the theatre group Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone and musicians who accompanied Marina, including Lobão on drums. The band gained visibility at the innovative Circo Voador, where their irreverent and theatrical performances captured the attention of the public and the industry, consolidating 1982 as a 'ground zero' for the Rock Brasil movement, which would transform the country's youth culture.
Recording
The phenomenal success of the single "Você Não Soube Me Amar", released in July 1982 even before the album, granted the EMI-Odeon label complete freedom for Blitz to record their debut work. The album was produced by Mariozinho Rocha and the recording process, including a 'demo' at the Transamérica studio, was marked by spontaneity and agility, with the songs being recorded 'quickly, in one go, on the 16 channels available at the time'. Despite the energy of the sessions, the album's mixing was later considered rudimentary, conceived in mono, with the vocals prominent and the instruments in a 'jumble' in the background, demonstrating the technical limitations of the era. The album's visual concept was equally innovative: the cover, designed by Gringo Cardia and Luiz Stein, aimed to resemble a drawing without mischaracterising the band members, using hand-glued clothing cut-outs and a font inspired by X-Men comics for the band's name. Old advertisement stickers adorned the back cover, and the original idea foresaw the inclusion of a Blitz comic book as a freebie.
Songs
As Aventuras da Blitz is an album full of songs that became anthems for a generation. The major hit "Você Não Soube Me Amar", the first single, was a tremendous success and was included in the soundtrack of the TV soap opera Sol de Verão. Other notable tracks include "Mais Uma de Amor (Geme Geme)", which would become the theme for the TV soap opera A Viagem years later, and the popular "O Beijo da Mulher Aranha" and "Volta ao Mundo". Part of the album's audacity lies in its lyrics, which explored colloquial language and youth slang, with a humour and irreverence that were uncommon in music at the time. However, this creative freedom ran into military regime censorship. The songs "Cruel Cruel Esquizofrenético Blues" and "Ela Foi Morar Comigo na Lua" were banned for containing words and phrases considered vulgar, such as "Era boa em línguas mas não sabia beijar" or "Você está meio confusa mas fica / Mais bonita assim sem blusa". The record label even rendered them unusable on vinyl records by manually scratching them, making them available only on the CD version.

Even after the fleeting appearance of Eduardo Dusek or Gang 90 at the festivals sponsored by Rede Globo, the distinguished public, having forgotten the ancestral good humour of the Tropicalistas and Raul Seixas, was caught unawares by the explosion of Blitz.

Legacy
As Aventuras da Blitz was a resounding commercial and critical success. The album sold over 100,000 copies, while the single "Você Não Soube Me Amar" reached an impressive milestone of over 700,000 copies sold, with some sources indicating nearly 1 million singles. This expressive sales volume and the inclusion of tracks on TV soap opera soundtracks, such as "Você Não Soube Me Amar" in Sol de Verão and "Mais Uma de Amor (Geme Geme)" in A Viagem, demonstrate the work's widespread public acceptance. Contemporary critics were largely positive, praising the band's pop eclecticism and theatrical irreverence. The album is recognised as a landmark of 80s national rock, commercially successful and culturally iconic, considered one of the 80 greatest Brazilian rock albums. With this album, Blitz not only consolidated their own trajectory but also paved the way for the massification of rock in Brazil and the emergence of other bands from the movement, establishing a new reality for the country's entertainment industry.

As canções eram extremamente visuais.

Valeu a pena, claro. Sobretudo para quem foi jovem nessa época, mesmo que de forma longínqua, do lado de cá do oceano que sempre separou os países irmãos.
