Vida Noturna nº 1
Caco Velho
1958

Why This Album Matters
Vida Noturna nº 1, released in 1958, is a seminal album that showcases the vibrant and singular style of Caco Velho, one of the great masters of samba de breque and the so-called "telecotecos" in Brazil. In this work, the artist displays his vocal inventiveness, marked by onomatopoeias and falsettos, which earned him nicknames such as "the man with the cuíca in his throat". The record stands out for its duality, offering the listener both the rigour of a studio recording and the spontaneity of a live performance. This unique structure captures the essence of Caco Velho as an unparalleled performer, who masterfully transitioned between interpreting fast-paced sambas and demonstrating deep feeling in more melancholic songs. In a year when Bossa Nova began to emerge and redefine Brazilian popular music, Caco Velho, with Vida Noturna nº 1, affirmed a sound rooted in more traditional samba, yet with its own modernity and swing, which positioned him as a figure ahead of his time on the musical scene.
Context
Before the recording of Vida Noturna nº 1, Caco Velho, whose birth name was Mateus Nunes, was already an established figure in the Brazilian music scene, especially in the Rio-São Paulo entertainment venues during the 1950s and 1960s. Originally from Porto Alegre, he began his career playing on gaucho radio stations and quickly moved to São Paulo, where he became a star on Rádio Tupi. Known as "o sambista infernal", Caco Velho had already taken his samba to France, enchanting audiences with his contagious rhythm. The year 1958 was a landmark in Brazilian music history, with the official inauguration of bossa nova through Elizeth Cardoso's album Canção do Amor Demais, and, six months later, João Gilberto's 78 RPM with "Chega de Saudade". In this context of effervescence and change, Caco Velho's Vida Noturna nº 1 represented a vibrant expression of traditional samba, contrasting with new trends, but equally relevant in its originality and vigour.
Recording
The album Vida Noturna nº 1 was released in 1958 by the Copacabana record label and features a particularity in its structure: it is divided into two distinct parts. Side A of the LP comprises studio recordings, where Caco Velho is accompanied by his ensemble. In this section, Caco Velho himself demonstrates his instrumental versatility, playing double bass, bongo, and drums, alongside musicians such as Nelson Racy on piano, Filhinho on guitar, Caçulinha on accordion, and Alemãozinho on drums. Side B of the record, on the other hand, offers a "live" recording, capturing Caco Velho's energy during a performance at the São Paulo nightclub Delval Bar, one of the famous venues of the era. In this section, he is accompanied by the renowned pianist and composer Hervé Cordovil, in a more intimate line-up that highlights his vocal improvisations and captivating performance. The LP bore the appendix "nº1" on its cover, suggesting it would be the first in a series, although subsequent volumes were never recorded.
Songs
The songs on Vida Noturna nº 1 reflect Caco Velho's distinctive style, with fast-paced and "de breque" sambas, full of his characteristic swing and vocalises. Among the tracks on side A, recorded in the studio with his ensemble, compositions like "Botina Estranha", "Não Consigo Entender" and "Silêncio", by Raul Torres, stand out. There is also an adaptation by Caco Velho of Boccherini's "Minueto", which demonstrates his ability to move between different genres with his unique signature. Side B, recorded live, features classics such as the song "Caco Velho", by Ary Barroso, which gave the artist his well-known nickname. Other notable sambas include "Nêga", where Caco Velho creates a curious "duet" with an "invisible interpreter" who, in fact, is the artist himself using falsettos, and the witty "Minha Candidatura", by Antonio Bruno. The album also includes his interpretation of "Se Acaso Você Chegasse", by Lupicínio Rodrigues and Felisberto Martins, reinforcing the versatility of the repertoire and Caco Velho's interpretive skill.
Legacy
Vida Noturna nº 1 consolidated Caco Velho's image as a "champion of swing" and an artist ahead of his time, even though his recognition was more cherished among connoisseurs and specialists in Brazilian music. The album, with its mix of studio and live recordings, served as an important document of Caco Velho's style, which was distinguished by his swinging way of singing and his ability to mimic instruments with his mouth. Although Caco Velho recorded over 30 LPs throughout his career and influenced other artists, his work, including Vida Noturna nº 1, often remained restricted to a circle of admirers, without the broad recognition of contemporary names. However, the record is valued by researchers and musicians who seek to reclaim the work of an artist who made his mark on the national samba scene, being an example of his inventive and entertaining style.
