Recording
The conception of Cê was intentionally focused on the band, with most of the material being composed with joint performance already in mind. Guitarist and percussionist Pedro Sá, who was previously confirmed for the project, was tasked with selecting the other musicians. The main recording of the album was surprisingly swift, completed in just two weeks, an achievement attributed to the extensive rehearsals conducted in the preceding months. However, the total process, including the production of the rhythmic tracks, extended for another six weeks. Caetano Veloso revealed that the album's "conciseness" of sound was a deliberate intention, facilitated by the collaboration with the young musicians.
Songs
The lyrical themes of Cê attracted considerable critical attention, being consistently described as "carnal" and deeply focused on sexuality. The album displays a profusion of poetic representations and a widespread preoccupation with sex and melancholy, notable for its exploration of unconventional sexual roles and an introspection into Veloso's own sexual orientation. Caetano Veloso described Cê as the result of a "mutation", a desire to create an unpretentious rock album that ultimately did not materialise exactly as planned, much like the initial idea for a samba album. The songs were all composed by Veloso, reflecting this phase of experimentation and creative freedom.
Legacy
Cê was met with "generally favourable reviews", achieving a score of 75 out of 100 on the Metacritic aggregator, based on 12 reviews. Critics such as Sasha Frere-Jones, from The New Yorker, described the album as the closest to indie rock in Veloso's discography, praising its striking rhythms and the genre's fluidity. Ben Ratliff, from The New York Times, noted the "mean in the emotional spectrum" approach and the rawness of the compositions. Although Philip Jandovský from AllMusic awarded it three out of five stars, considering it lacked Veloso's characteristic "creative spark", Mallory O'Donnell from Stylus Magazine and Mike Powell from The Village Voice considered it one of the artist's best recent works, highlighting its simplicity as a "triumph". The album was recognised with the Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album.
