Context
The release of Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis was preceded by the significant impact of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in their performances at the III Festival de Música Popular da TV Record, in 1967. This period established the foundations of musical Tropicalismo, a movement that sought to amalgamate traditional Brazilian cultural manifestations with the latest artistic and behavioural trends of the time. Tropicália, before having social or political aims, primarily asserted itself as a movement of aesthetic and behavioural character.
Recording
Recordings for the album, which would become the musical manifesto of Tropicalismo, began in May 1968. To realise this vision, the project featured a stellar cast of artists, including Gal Costa, Nara Leão, Os Mutantes (Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee, and Sérgio Dias), Tom Zé, in addition to poets José Capinam and Torquato Neto, and maestro Rogério Duprat, who was responsible for all the LP's arrangements.
Songs
The album opens with the track "Miserere Nobis", a composition by Gilberto Gil and José Capinam. Next, "Coração Materno" stands out, a song that, in its context, was considered to be in 'bad taste', evidencing the proposal to break paradigms. The album's title track is performed by the São Paulo group Os Mutantes, who imprint their registered mark of psychedelia onto the song. Another highlight is "Baby", which became a great success from the album in the voice of Gal Costa.

Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis consolidated its position as one of the most important works in Brazilian music. Contemporary critics, at the time of its release, already recognised it as one of the best albums of the year. Years later, Rolling Stone Brasil magazine elected it as the second greatest album in Brazilian music in its list of "100 Maiores Discos". In 2012, the audience of Rádio Eldorado FM, Estadao.com, and the Caderno C2+Música section of the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo voted it the ninth best Brazilian album in history, reiterating its iconic and enduring status.
