Why This Album Matters
Capiba 80 Anos is a celebratory album, released in 1984 to mark the eightieth birthday of Lourenço da Fonseca Barbosa, or Capiba, one of the cornerstones of Brazilian popular music and an icon of Pernambucan culture. The album presents a rich and diverse panorama of the composer's work, immortalising his melodies which masterfully transition between vibrant frevos, rhythmic maracatus, choros, and sambas. This work is not merely a compilation, but a testament to Capiba's genius in capturing the essence of Pernambuco in his compositions. It offers the listener a profound immersion into the artist's musical universe, as he, throughout his career, was able to translate the soul of his land and its people into chords and verses. It is a fundamental work for understanding the breadth of his contribution to MPB and his relevance as one of Brazil's greatest composers.
Context
The album Capiba 80 Anos was released at a special time, marking eight decades of the life of composer Lourenço da Fonseca Barbosa, artistically known as Capiba. Born in Surubim, Pernambuco, in 1904, Capiba built a prolific and diverse career, recognised as Brazil's most celebrated frevo composer, but also exploring sambas, maracatus, waltzes, songs, and even classical music. Prior to this commemorative album, Capiba had already established himself as a central figure in Brazilian music, with compositions that became classics and partnerships with great names in poetry and music. The album's release by Fundarpe, the Historical and Artistic Heritage Foundation of Pernambuco, in collaboration with Funarte, underlined the importance of his work for the country's cultural heritage.
Recording
The recording of the album Capiba 80 Anos took place between 3 and 11 September 1984. For the production, notable equipment from the era was used, such as an 8-channel Allen and Hearth Ltd. mixer and Neumann, Sony, Shure, and Sennheiser microphones, aiming for high quality sound capture. The project relied on the collaboration of the City of Recife Prefecture and the City of Recife Culture Foundation, as well as the National Arts Foundation (Funarte), demonstrating a joint effort to honour the composer. Its publication ensured that a significant part of his work was documented and celebrated in a format accessible to the public and critics, reinforcing the recognition of Capiba as a Brazilian cultural heritage. Although there are no specific data on sales or chart positions, the very fact that it was an institutional release of such magnitude to celebrate a living artist already attests to its importance and the reverence for his contribution.
