Why This Album Matters

Acústico MTV: Capital Inicial, released in May 2000, was not merely another record from MTV Brasil's popular concert series, but a true turning point in the trajectory of the Brasília-based band. The album represented a reunion of Capital Inicial with the general public and a reinvention of their sound, adapting the vigour of 80s rock to acoustic and more intimate arrangements. This work allowed the band, which was facing a period of reduced commercial visibility in the late 90s, to regain its relevance and win over a new generation of fans. By transforming electric, energetic songs into more delicate versions, Capital Inicial demonstrated artistic maturity and the versatility of their repertoire, solidifying their position as one of the great names in Brazilian rock.

Context

In the late 1990s, Capital Inicial, despite having a consolidated history since the 80s in Brasília, was experiencing a period of seclusion in the Brazilian music scene, having lost some of its commercial strength and mainstream presence. It was in this context of seeking a 'revival' that the invitation emerged to join the prestigious Acústico MTV series, an opportunity that had already revitalised the careers of other artists. The 1998 album Atrás dos Olhos already indicated a path for the band's resurgence, but it was the acoustic format that provided the decisive turning point.

Recording

The recording of Acústico MTV: Capital Inicial took place on 21 March 2000, at Teatro Mars, located in the Bela Vista neighbourhood of São Paulo. The choice of an intimate theatre, with around 200 seats, distinguished this project from other MTV Brasil acoustic sessions, which usually featured grand productions. Musical production was handled by Marcelo Sussekind, who also participated as a backing musician, playing acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and eBow. The band, comprising Dinho Ouro Preto (vocals), Loro Jones (acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Flávio Lemos (acoustic bass guitar), and Fê Lemos (drums), featured essential guest musicians. Kiko Zambianchi contributed acoustic guitar and backing vocals on all tracks and toured with the band for a year after the release. Other backing musicians included Aislan Gomes (Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and Denny Conceição (percussion), in addition to the special vocal appearance by singer Zélia Duncan, a school friend of Dinho's, on the track "Eu Vou Estar". Dinho Ouro Preto recalled the low budget and the nervousness of the recording, which was completed in just one day.

Songs

The repertoire of Acústico MTV: Capital Inicial blends great successes from the band's career with unreleased songs that would quickly become new classics. Among the songs that stood out and propelled the album up the charts are the unreleased tracks "Tudo que Vai" and "Natasha", both with widespread popular appeal. Another highlight was the new and striking version of "Primeiros Erros (Chove)", composed by Kiko Zambianchi, who participated in the recording and tour. The album also featured re-interpretations of hits such as "Cai a Noite", "Independência", and "Fogo", which gained a renewed and more intimate sound, while retaining Capital Inicial's characteristic energy. The track "Eu Vou Estar" featured the special vocal participation of Zélia Duncan, adding a layer of depth and collaboration to the project. Some songs like "1999", "Belos e Malditos", and "Kamikaze" were played at the recording concert, but were not included on the final album.

Legacy

Acústico MTV: Capital Inicial was a phenomenal success, with sales exceeding one million copies, a remarkable achievement for the time. The impact was immediate, with six of its tracks making it onto the radio, consolidating the band's resurgence. Critics, in general, reviewed the album positively; Alexandre Nagado, from Omelete, praised its "vigorous urban music" and Jamari França, from Jornal do Brasil, highlighted Marcelo Sussekind's "light and unblocked revision" and "perfect sound production". However, Paulo Vieira, from Folha de S. Paulo, presented a negative critique, considering Capital Inicial 'dated'. The album is widely considered a turning point in the band's career, a 'new lease of life' that led them to perform more shows than ever in 2000. Dinho Ouro Preto himself divides the history of Capital Inicial into before and after Acústico MTV. Its importance was recognised in the Discoteca Básica podcast's list of the 500 greatest Brazilian music albums, where it was ranked number 347, being one of only two of the band's albums to feature in the survey. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of its release, the band announced a commemorative tour for 2025, bringing together some of the musicians from the original recording, such as Denny Conceição, Aislan Gomes, and Kiko Zambianchi, with production by Marcelo Sussekind.
