Why This Album Matters

Fala Mangueira!, released in 1968, is an anthological album celebrating the Estação Primeira de Mangueira samba school through the voices of some of its greatest exponents and other major names in samba. Considered a true classic of the genre, the album brings together the unparalleled talent of Cartola, Carlos Cachaça, Clementina de Jesus, Nelson Cavaquinho and Odete Amaral, creating a fortuitous and historic encounter in Brazilian music. This work stands out for its authenticity and deep connection to the Mangueirense soul, presenting a repertoire that exalts the tradition, poetry and daily life of the favela. It is an essential work for understanding the richness of traditional samba and the importance of Mangueira in Brazil's cultural landscape, offering a sonic experience that transcends time.

Context

The idea for the album originated from a musical project about Mangueira, conceived by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho (Vianinha) and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho. Although the show was not realised, the proposal resulted in this memorable phonographic recording, immortalising the artists' encounter. The performers gathered on the album had strong ties to Mangueira and the history of samba. Cartola and Carlos Cachaça, for example, are central figures in the school's foundation and development, while Clementina de Jesus and Nelson Cavaquinho are pillars of samba and Brazilian popular music.

Recording

The album Fala Mangueira! was recorded and released in 1968 by the Odeon label. Executive production was handled by Milton Miranda, with assistance from Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, who also played a fundamental role in the project's conception. The original release was on LP format and in mono. The album's technical specifications do not credit the musicians, but mention Clementina de Jesus, Odete Amaral, Cartola and Zezinho as participating voices.

Songs

The album's repertoire is an ode to Mangueira, featuring sambas that celebrate the school and life in the favela. Many of the tracks are presented in a potpourri format, creating a fluid and connected narrative. Among the standout compositions are classics such as "Tempos Idos" (by Carlos Cachaça and Cartola) and "Ao Amanhecer" (by Cartola). The album also includes "Alvorada no Morro", a partnership by Carlos Cachaça, Cartola and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, and "Sei Lá, Mangueira", by Paulinho da Viola and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho. Nelson Cavaquinho is celebrated with a potpourri of his works, including "Rei Vagabundo", "A Mangueira me Chama", "Sempre Mangueira", "Folhas Caídas" and "Eu e as Flores".

Legacy

Fala Mangueira! is widely recognised as a landmark in samba discography and an indispensable album for any Brazilian music collection. Its relevance has endured over the decades, being re-released on CD in 2002, as part of the series "Odeon - 100 Anos de Música no Brasil". In addition to the CD re-release, the album had LP re-editions, including a commemorative version in 1978 titled Cartola 70, in honour of the sambista's 70th birthday, retaining the original material. Other vinyl re-editions occurred in 1988. This longevity demonstrates the cultural impact of the work and the timelessness of the songs and their performers.
