Why This Album Matters

Estúpido Cupido, released in 1959, marks the phonographic debut of the legendary Celly Campello and stands out as an initial landmark for Brazilian rock. Considered by many to be the genre's first LP in the country, this album captured the spirit of an era, presenting a vibrant and innovative sound. The work is essential for understanding the roots of rock and roll in Brazil, through the unmistakable voice of its pioneer. The title track, a version of "Stupid Cupid", quickly became a phenomenon, establishing itself as the biggest hit of 1960. The album, in its entirety, offers a panorama of Celly's talent and the energy she brought to Brazilian popular music, laying the foundations for future generations of artists.

Context

Estúpido Cupido represents the starting point in Celly Campello's discographical career. This debut album launched her onto the music scene, establishing her as one of the most promising and innovative voices of her generation.

Recording

The album featured the instrumental accompaniment of Mário Gennari Filho's ensemble, which provided the musical foundation for the tracks. Additionally, the Titulares do Ritmo choir participated in the recording, although without receiving official credit on the album's release.

Songs

The album's namesake song, "Estúpido Cupido", is a Portuguese version by Fred Jorge of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield's original composition, "Stupid Cupid", popularised by Connie Francis. In addition to it, the album features other adaptations of international hits, such as "The Secret" and "Very Young" ("Muito Jovem"), as well as original compositions, including "Handsome Boy" by Mário Gennari Filho and Celeste Novaes, and "Querido Cupido" by Fred Jorge and Archimedes Messina. The track selection showcased a mixture of national influences and talents in musical adaptation and creation.

Legacy

Estúpido Cupido achieved the notable mark of 120 thousand copies sold, consolidating itself for many years as the best-selling Brazilian rock album in history. Its relevance transcended sales, being recognised as a pioneer of the genre in Brazil. Seventeen years after its initial release, the title track "Estúpido Cupido" gained new life when it was chosen as the opening theme for the eponymous telenovela, broadcast by Rede Globo in 1976. This revival revitalised Celly Campello's career, pulling her out of ostracism and propelling her back onto the radio music charts.
