Why This Album Matters

Almanaque, released in 1981, is a studio album that reasserts Chico Buarque's mastery as one of the most important composers of Brazilian popular music. The record showcases the lyrical complexity and melodic sophistication characteristic of his work, maintaining a dialogue with the social and personal dilemmas of the era through metaphors and engaging narratives. This work stands out for its ability to navigate between veiled political criticism and poetic sensibility, delivering songs that have become significant in the national repertoire. Chico Buarque once again demonstrates his skill in creating a dense and accessible musical universe, where each track invites reflection and aesthetic appreciation.

Recording

The musical production for Almanaque was overseen by Marco Mazzola, known as "Mazola", who also served as mixing engineer. Production coordination was carried out by Homero Ferreira, with Eva Straus providing artistic assistance and Paschoal Perrota handling the arrangements. Recording sessions featured Luís Paulo Martins and Célio Martins as engineers, assisted by João Ricardo, Luis Guilherme, Serginho, and Zé Carlos, in addition to Antonio Cesar as studio assistant. Mixing had Júlio Martins as assistant, Teddo Gouvea for editing, and Américo (Tapecar) for cutting. The album also benefited from arrangements by renowned musicians: Francis Hime contributed piano and arrangements on several tracks, while Magro arranged "A Voz do Dono e o Dono da Voz", Edu Lobo oversaw "Moto-Contínuo", and Dori Caymmi handled "Angélica". Toquinho added his guitar to "Ela É Dançarina", "Almanaque", and "Amor Barato", and a choir of voices, including Miúcha, Cristina Buarque, and Carlinhos Vergueiro, enriched "Amor Barato".

Songs

Among the songs on Almanaque, some stand out for the depth of their lyrics and contexts. "A Voz do Dono e o Dono da Voz" is particularly notable for being inspired by a legal dispute faced by Chico Buarque between his label at the time, Ariola, and his previous one, PolyGram, a complex situation that left him voiceless and without authority over his own circumstances. Another highlight is "Angélica", an emotional tribute to fashion designer Zuzu Angel. The song references Zuzu's tragic fate: a week before her death in a 1978 traffic accident, she had left a note at Chico's house requesting that, in the event of her death, it be disclosed that military personnel would be responsible, the same individuals who had murdered her son Stuart Angel Jones seven years earlier and made his body disappear. The verse "Só queria embalar seu filho / Que mora na escuridão do mar" suggests the possibility that Stuart's body was thrown into the ocean.

Legacy

Almanaque achieved considerable commercial success in Brazil, selling 400,000 copies, as reported by the newspaper O Fluminense. In addition to its sales success, the album also placed one of its songs on the charts: "As Vitrines" reached the 95th position among the 100 most played songs in 1982.

Chico Buarque - O Futebol

2005

Chico Buarque's passion for football is rivalled only by his connection to music, and sometimes it even takes precedence. In this eighth DVD from the retrospective series of his work, Chico reminisces, at the Maracanã stadium, about the great players and moving moments of Brazilian football, such as the defeat to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final. At Confeitaria Colombo in Rio, he performs sambas that speak of football, and on the informal football pitch in Barra da Tijuca, he receives visits from idols Pagão and Pelé. The DVD shows the artist playing football in the cities of Santos, Rio, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris and Budapest, and also features a selection of memorable plays and goals by stars such as Pelé, Garrincha, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. It also features a meeting with Ronaldinho in Barcelona, where the subject, as expected, was music and football.

Chico Buarque - Romance

2015

Love songs are very common in Brazilian music and also in Chico Buarque's work. Recorded in Paris, this seventh DVD from the retrospective series of the composer's work features hits like 'Eu Te Amo', 'Atrás da Porta', 'Futuros Amantes' and 11 other songs, with appearances by Elis Regina, Daniela Mercury and Edu Lobo. Chico walks through the intimate streets of the French capital and talks about the nature of romantic feelings. He confesses his joy at having inspired romances and observes that while our grandparents' generation turned to poems for seduction, today's couples exchange song lyrics like 'text messages'. He talks about 'piropos', which are verses made to win over the beloved woman, and says that Vinicius was a master of the genre. To illustrate, Chico composed the song 'Outros Sonhos', a beautiful 'piropo', especially for this DVD.
