Why This Album Matters

Released in 1983, O Grande Circo Místico is not merely an album, but the soundtrack to a show that would become a landmark in Brazilian culture. The result of a brilliant collaboration between Chico Buarque, responsible for the lyrics, and Edu Lobo, the composer, the work stands out for its musical sophistication and poetic depth, weaving a vibrant lyricism and a latent emotional core rarely achieved in Brazilian Popular Music. The record transcends the mere function of scenic accompaniment, establishing itself as an autonomous and essential piece in the MPB canon. The grandeur of the project is further accentuated by the constellation of voices that bring the songs to life. Names such as Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa, Simone, Zizi Possi, Gilberto Gil, Tim Maia and Jane Duboc lend their talents to interpretations that have become definitive and contribute to the mystical and playful atmosphere of the work. O Grande Circo Místico dissolves and blends with music, poetry, theatre and the circus, transporting the listener on a dreamlike and profoundly emotional journey.

Context

The genesis of O Grande Circo Místico dates back to a commission from the Balé Teatro Guaíra, of Curitiba, Paraná, in 1982. The project aimed to create a dance spectacle inspired by Jorge de Lima's eponymous poem, written in 1938 and published in his work "A Túnica Inconsútil". The poem, in turn, narrates the saga of the Austrian Knieps family, owners of a circus, and the love between an aristocrat and an acrobat, based on a real 19th-century event. Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo, already established figures in MPB, were no strangers to soundtrack work for theatre, which paved the way for what would become one of their most acclaimed collaborations. The early 1980s in Brazil were still experiencing the post-military dictatorship effervescence, a fertile period for artistic experimentation and for the creation of ambitious and symbolic works, such as this one, which would unite modernist poetry and popular music in a 'total spectacle'.

Recording

The album O Grande Circo Místico was originally released by the Som Livre label in 1983. Production involved Edu Lobo and Homero Ferreira, and orchestration and conducting were led by maestro Chiquinho de Moraes, whose contribution was so significant that he is considered by many to be a co-author of the work. The complexity and sonic richness of the album are the result of this meticulous work of arrangement and musical direction. The original LP recording included 11 songs, but in its CD re-releases by labels such as Velas, PolyGram and Biscoito Fino, Edu Lobo added two instrumental tracks, "Oremus" and "O Tatuador", which had been omitted from the vinyl version due to the format limitations of the time. The album was conceived with a sophisticated format, featuring a lavish booklet with illustrations by Naum Alves de Souza for each song, enriching the listener's experience and visually connecting them to the circus narrative.

Songs

Chico Buarque's lyrics in O Grande Circo Místico are an ode to poetry, marrying perfectly with Edu Lobo's melodies to narrate the circus saga with lyricism and depth. Among the most emblematic tracks, "Beatriz", interpreted by Milton Nascimento, stands out. It describes an idealised, beautiful and complex woman, and its composition is structured in four stanzas, with three of them presenting a similar structure, intensifying her mystical image. "A História de Lily Braun", sung by Gal Costa, is another classic that has become eternal, exploring the nuances of circus life and art. Gilberto Gil lends his voice to "Sobre Todas as Coisas", a moment of profound existentialist reflection, where Chico Buarque's lyrics question creation and man's role in the universe in a monologue addressed to God, with a poignant and anguished interpretation. Meanwhile, "O Circo Místico", sung by Zizi Possi, uses the circus universe as a rich metaphor for the duality between reality and illusion, exploring themes of transformation and continuity, with verses that provoke doubt about what is real and what is a commonplace trick. The album also features the notable contributions of Tim Maia in "A Bela e a Fera" and Simone in "Meu Namorado", as well as a children's choir in "Ciranda da Bailarina" and the duo themselves in "Na Carreira".

Legacy

O Grande Circo Místico, both the ballet and the album, achieved resounding public and critical success in Brazil and Portugal. The original show, staged by the Balé Teatro Guaíra, undertook a two-year tour, being watched by over 200,000 people in almost 200 performances and being acclaimed as one of the most complete works ever presented in the country. The positive press reception highlighted the success of the attempt to popularise ballet through popular music, allowing the soundtrack to be released as a conventional MPB record. Although none of the songs immediately topped the charts, they became unquestionable MPB classics, such as "Beatriz", "A História de Lily Braun" and "O Circo Místico", consolidating the album as an essential title. Music critic Aldir Blanc even described it as 'the most beautiful LP of the century'. The enduring importance of the work is evidenced by multiple CD re-releases and the inspiration it generated, including a film directed by Cacá Diegues in 2018, demonstrating the cultural resonance of O Grande Circo Místico for decades.
