Why This Album Matters
Tente Mudar o Amanhã, released in 1985, is Cólera's debut album and a fundamental landmark in the history of Brazilian punk rock. It represents not only the beginning of the discography of one of the most emblematic groups of the genre in the country, but also the crystallisation of a sound and a lyrical stance that would become references for various generations of musicians and activists. With a raw and direct approach, the album solidified Cólera's identity, characterised by pacifist, engaged, and incisive social critique lyrics. Its musical style, which blends punk's aggression with hardcore influences, stood out for its energy and authenticity, essential elements for understanding the cultural effervescence of the Brazilian underground scene in the 80s. This inaugural work is essential for understanding the evolution of Brazilian rock and how national punk managed to develop its own voice, addressing local and global issues with urgency and passion. It is a work that echoes the "do it yourself" attitude and the conviction that music can be a powerful tool for social transformation.
Context
Cólera emerged in 1979 in São Paulo, positioning themselves as one of the pioneering bands of the punk movement in Brazil. Before the release of their first album, the group had already paved its way with appearances on historical national punk rock compilations, such as Grito Suburbano (1982), O Começo do Fim do Mundo (1982), and Sub (1983). The 1980s in Brazil, a period of political transition post-military dictatorship, offered fertile ground for the emergence of dissenting voices. The "do it yourself" (DIY) ethos, intrinsic to punk, allowed bands like Cólera to create and disseminate their art independently. Tente Mudar o Amanhã was the first release from the Ataque Frontal label, founded by vocalist and guitarist Redson, a fundamental pillar for the independent scene of the time.
Recording
The album Tente Mudar o Amanhã was released in 1985 in LP format. The album's production was a collaboration between the band Cólera themselves, Marcos S. Araujo, and Renato Filho. The recording featured Chimbal as recording engineer, contributing to the distinctive sound of the work. Originally released by Redson's Ataque Frontal label, the album exemplifies the autonomy and independence that characterised the punk movement of the time. Later versions and re-issues were released by other labels, such as Devil Discos and Outsider Classics, attesting to the work's perennial nature and relevance over time.
Songs
Composed of twenty tracks and with an approximate duration of 37 minutes, Tente Mudar o Amanhã is a cry against injustice and apathy. The lyrics address a range of urgent themes, from nuclear fear and the Cold War, exemplified in songs like "1.9.9.2." and "Duas Ogivas", to urban violence and the authorities' neglect. Tracks such as "São Paulo" and "C.D.M.P." (Cidade dos Meus Pesadelos) express a punk nihilism and a biting critique of the metropolis, with verses that have become iconic. The album is also marked by songs that call for social action and mobilisation, such as "Agir", "Rasgando no Ar", "Passeata", "Sarjeta", and "Violar Suas Leis", reflecting the band's strong pacifist and committed stance. Musically, the album presents a cohesive structure: the bass, played with picks and at high volume, often follows the vocal melody, while choruses are sung in unison by three voices. Redson's guitar contributes a "chainsaw" effect, and Pierre's drumming maintains a safe and repetitive pattern, with few fills, but great impact.
Legacy
Tente Mudar o Amanhã was received with positive impact by the scene and by critics, consolidating Cólera's reputation as one of the most important bands in Brazilian punk. The album paved the way for the success of its successor, Pela Paz em Todo Mundo (1986), which would become a sales record-breaker and lead Cólera to be the first Brazilian punk band to tour Europe. The work is frequently cited as part of a "legendary world punk trilogy", alongside Pela Paz em Todo Mundo and É Natal!?! Its sound and the themes addressed anticipated elements of melodic hardcore that would gain strength in the following decade, exercising concrete influence on subsequent musicians and albums. The aesthetic and political legacy of Tente Mudar o Amanhã remains crystal clear, being revered as one of the great rock albums in the world and a landmark in Brazilian music, which continues to inspire new generations to "try to change tomorrow".
