Why This Album Matters

Nó na Orelha marks a turning point in the career of Brazilian rapper Criolo, being his second studio album and a work that significantly distinguishes itself from its predecessor. Released in 2011, the album is an audacious fusion of genres, breaking the barriers of traditional rap to incorporate elements of afrobeat, hip hop, reggae, samba and brega. This rich and inventive blend of sonorities gives the album a unique identity within Brazilian music, consolidating Criolo as a plural and innovative artist. The work demonstrates the artist's versatility and his ability to engage with various musical strands, creating a contemporary sound deeply rooted in Brazilian culture.

Recording

The album Nó na Orelha was produced by Daniel Ganjaman and Marcelo Cabral. Its official release took place on 25 April 2011, made available both in physical format, through CDs and vinyls via Livraria Cultura, and in digital format, with free distribution by the Oloko Records label.

Songs

The album Nó na Orelha presented several prominent singles, starting with "Subirodoistiozin" in December 2010. Subsequently, "Não existe amor em SP" was released in March 2011, consolidating its position as one of the album's most emblematic songs. Later, the public became acquainted with "Freguês da meia-noite" in December 2011 and "Mariô" in July 2012. "Não existe amor em SP" achieved particular recognition, being performed by Criolo and Caetano Veloso together during the Video Music Brasil awards ceremony in 2011. The album also features notable participations, including Kiko Dinucci on guitar in "Mariô", Rodrigo Campos on cavaquinho and percussion in "Linha de Frente", and the voices of Verônica Ferriani and Juçara Marçal on backing vocals.

Legacy

Nó na Orelha received an extremely positive critical reception, being widely acclaimed by the specialist press. Rolling Stone magazine, for example, elected it the best national album of 2011, and the song "Não existe amor em SP" as the best national song of the same year. The album's success was reiterated at awards ceremonies, where Nó na Orelha and "Não existe amor em SP" were recognised as best album and best song, respectively, at the Video Music Brasil 2011. The album was nominated in three categories at VMB 2011, winning two, while Criolo was awarded as Breakthrough Artist or Band, from his two nominations.
