Why This Album Matters

DeFalla, a band formed in Porto Alegre in 1985, stood out in the national rock scene for its constant metamorphosis, both in its line-up and in its aesthetic and sound. With a repertoire that embraces everything from new wave and rock and roll to funk rock, rap metal, hard rock, and heavy metal, the band knew how to reinvent itself, later flirting with glam rock, big beat, funk carioca, melodic hardcore, and miami bass. This irreverence and the incessant search for new musical languages positioned DeFalla as a unique group, challenging categorisations and maintaining an unpredictability that became their trademark. Their trajectory in the alternative circuit, with striking performances, solidified their reputation as a creative and innovative force in Brazilian music.

Context

Formed in 1985 in Porto Alegre, DeFalla emerged with a proposal that initially aligned with new wave and rock and roll influences. The original line-up, comprising Carlo Pianta on bass, Edu K on vocals and guitar, and Biba Meira on drums, quickly established itself in the Rio Grande do Sul alternative circuit. The band began to register its sound identity with their participation in the compilation Rock Grande do Sul in 1986. In a period of intense and rapid production, the group released its first albums, Papaparty in 1987 and It's Fuckin' Borin' to Death in 1988, through the Plug label. Before the recording of the first album, Carlo Pianta left the group, making way for Castor Daudt and Flávio "Flu" Santos, who would go on to solidify the band's "classic line-up".

Recording

DeFalla's discography was marked by a succession of releases that reflect their stylistic mutations. Following their initial works on the Plug label, such as Papaparty and It's Fuckin' Borin' to Death, the band recorded Screw You! live in 1989 for Devil Discos, already with line-up changes. In 1990, with a shift towards hard rock and heavy metal, they recorded We Give a Shit! (Kickin' Ass for Fun) for Cogumelo Records, a label notable for releasing bands like Sepultura. Experimentation continued on the album Monstro, released in 2016. In this work, the band, produced by Edu K and with self-funding and fan sponsorship, explored the studio as an instrument, embracing an experimentalism that the group self-dubbed 'post-prog'. This modern approach, with doses of references to 60s and 70s bands, demonstrates DeFalla's relentless pursuit of new sounds and recording techniques. There was also a notable phase, the "Fire" phase (around 1996), where the production and mixing of singles and demos were carried out in New York by Eduardo Marote, with the intention of an alternative vinyl release for DJs.

Songs

DeFalla's compositions reflected the band's constant and irreverent stylistic shifts. In 1992, the album Kingzobullshitbackinfulleffect92 presented an innovative fusion of MPB with rock and funk, incorporating hip hop elements. This album, for instance, revisited earlier tracks like "It's Fuckin' Borin' to Death", which received a shorter version for a music video. In its "Fire" phase, the band dedicated itself to re-recording their own songs such as "Não me Mande Flores", "Screw You!", "Repelente", and "Sodomia", as well as unusual covers ranging from Madonna ("Ray of Light") to Jimi Hendrix ("Fire") and The Stooges ("Raw Power"), showcasing the breadth of their influences. Later, with the album Miami Rock 2000, the group achieved great visibility with the song "Popozuda Rock'n'Roll", exploring miami bass, although it drew criticism from traditional fans for its move towards commercial music. On Monstro, the band pursued a post-prog style, marked by intense experimentalism and the use of the studio as a creative tool.

Legacy

DeFalla's impact on the Brazilian music scene was significant, especially due to their ability to influence new generations of artists. Their memorable performances at Circo Voador in the 1990s are frequently cited as crucial moments that opened doors and inspired bands such as Nação Zumbi, Mundo Livre S/A, Pato Fu, and Planet Hemp. In terms of critical recognition, the album Kingzobullshitbackinfulleffect92 was a landmark. Revista Bizz in 1992 named it "Melhor Disco" (Best Album), and the band received awards for "Melhor Grupo" (Best Group) and "Melhor Letrista e Vocalista" (Best Lyricist and Vocalist) for Edu K, in addition to prominent positions for "Melhor Música Nacional" (Best National Song) and "Melhor Capa" (Best Cover). This success propelled DeFalla to participate in the renowned Hollywood Rock festival in 1993, sharing the stage with major national and international acts. Although there were criticisms of the "Popozuda Rock'n'Roll" phase due to its commercial approach, the band continued to be a relevant force, returning to stages in various line-ups and releasing Monstro, which toured the country. The documentary "Sobre Amanhã" and the book "Sem Nenhuma Direção: DeFalla, 1987" more recently perpetuate the memory and analysis of their legacy.
