Why This Album Matters

Lilás, Djavan's sixth studio album released in 1984 by CBS Records, represents a milestone in his discography by embracing a more pop sound and intensely exploring electronic influences. The album was described as the singer's most pop offering, with a deep dive into electronic resources, evidenced in the album's title track itself. This work stood out for consolidating the artist's name in Música Popular Brasileira, delivering classics such as the title track, "Lilás", and the emblematic "Esquinas".

Recording

The album Lilás was produced by Erich Bulling.

Songs

The compositions on Lilás are entirely credited to Djavan, standing out for a predominance of romantic ballads, such as the tracks "Esquinas", "Liberdade", and "Transe". Beyond romanticism, the album surprises by featuring the cadence of a baião in "Canto da Lira" and the vivacity of samba in "Obi", demonstrating the artist's versatility. The song "Infinito" was part of the soundtrack for the Rede Globo soap opera Um Sonho a Mais, while "Miragem" was also promoted as a single.

Legacy

Lilás received favourable reviews, although they were considered inferior to the acclaimed album Luz. Critics such as Alvaro Neder from AllMusic and Mauro Ferreira from Notas Musicais rated the album 3 out of 5 stars. Neder classified it as a 'dance album, almost entirely complete with sounds devoted to funk/soul', praising the rhythmic interaction between Djavan's lyrics and singing. Mauro Ferreira, in turn, highlighted that the album, despite its electronic nature, generated two undeniable classics for Djavan's song catalogue, "Esquinas" and "Lilás". The title track "Lilás" was re-recorded and released as a single by the band Fat Family, and "Esquinas" gained a version by the group Manhattan Transfer. In 2014, the album, along with Djavan's discography, was made available on iTunes.
