Why This Album Matters

Nas Costas do Brasil, like any work by Dominguinhos, represents a profound immersion in Brazilian musicality, shaped by one of the country's most accomplished accordionists. His art is a melting pot of influences ranging from baião and forró to choro, bossa-nova, xote, and jazz, elements he masterfully harmonised into his peculiar sound. Through his impeccable execution and sensitive compositions, Dominguinhos consolidated his own musical career, which is undoubtedly reflected in this work. An album by him is always an invitation to explore the rhythmic and melodic richness that made him a pillar of MPB and Northeastern music, demonstrating his ability to blend tradition and innovation.

Context

Dominguinhos' career is a narrative of early talent and crucial encounters. Born José Domingos de Morais in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, he displayed musical aptitude from childhood, playing the accordion alongside his siblings and becoming known as Neném do acordeon. His destiny changed upon meeting Luiz Gonzaga, who invited him to Rio de Janeiro. In the capital city of Rio, under Gonzaga's tutelage and encouragement, Dominguinhos deepened his musical knowledge, exploring diverse genres and developing his unique style. His entry into the music scene came after years of training, participating in radio programmes and shows, culminating in the recording of his first album in 1964. This initial phase of maturation and consolidation was crucial for the artistic identity he would present in later works.
