Why This Album Matters

Dori Caymmi's album, released in 1972, marks the solo debut of one of the great names in Brazilian music. Considered a 'beautiful album' by critics, it stands out for its sophisticated sound, which traverses MPB, samba, bossa nova, and a soft pop forró with acoustic touches. This work is fundamental for understanding Dori Caymmi's authorial voice, which was already establishing itself as an arranger and composer. The record exclusively features original compositions, many with the exquisite lyrics of Nelson Motta and Paulo César Pinheiro, revealing the depth and elegance that would become the artist's hallmarks. Even after more than five decades since its release, the album Dory Caymmi continues to sound current, demonstrating its relevance and timelessness in the Brazilian music scene.

Context

Dori Caymmi, born in 1943 and son of the iconic Dorival Caymmi and singer Stella Maris, received his musical training from an early age, beginning piano studies at eight years old. His professional career began in 1959, accompanying his sister Nana Caymmi. Before his solo record, Dori was already recognised for his work as a producer and arranger for various artists, in addition to having established a fruitful partnership as a composer with Nelson Motta. In 1964, Dori Caymmi played a significant role in the effervescence of MPB by directing the play "Opinião" and participating as a guitarist, consolidating his position in the Brazilian music scene before embarking on his solo career with this 1972 album.

Recording

The album Dory Caymmi was recorded and released by Odeon in 1972. Dori Caymmi himself took on the roles of producer and arranger for the work, demonstrating his artistic control and vision for the project. The musical direction was handled by Maestro Lindolfo Gaya. The album's technical sheet reveals a strong team of musicians, including Robertinho Silva on drums and percussion, Luiz Alves and Novelli on bass, Wagner Tiso on piano and organ, and Nelson Angelo and Tavito on guitars, the latter also playing a 12-string guitar. Engineers Nivaldo and Zilmar, along with technicians Reny R. Lippi and Z. J. Merky, were responsible for the sound quality of the recording, under the production direction of Milton Miranda.

Songs

The album's repertoire comprises nine original tracks by Dori Caymmi, marking his identity as a composer. The lyrics are, for the most part, the result of collaborations with Nelson Motta and Paulo César Pinheiro, two great MPB lyricists. Among the standout songs are the poetic "O Cantador", "Minha Doce Namorada", "De Onde Vens?", and "Evangelho". The lyrics explore themes such as pain, lost love, and the journey of life, with a sensitivity characteristic of Dori Caymmi's work.

Legacy

Since its release, Dory Caymmi has been acclaimed as a 'great record', solidifying the artist's solo career. The positive reception of the work is evidenced by the opinion of Japanese journalist Willie Whopper, who considers it his favourite Dory Caymmi album, emphasising that it 'still sounds current after more than 50 years'. The quality of the album's compositions is reflected in the success of some of its tracks. The song "O Cantador", for example, gained international prominence when it was re-recorded by renowned artists such as Sarah Vaughan and Natalie Cole, attesting to the impact and durability of Dori Caymmi's music.

Lançado em 1972 só com músicas dele e com letras de Nelson Motta e Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. O álbum pra mim lembra muito a sonoridade do Clube da Esquina (Milton Nascimento, musica mineira).

Dori Caymmi - Dory Caymmi - by Rafael Morettini
