Why This Album Matters

Antes do Fim, released in 1986, represents a singular milestone in the trajectory of Dorsal Atlântica and in the Brazilian thrash metal scene. This was the band's first solo album, establishing itself as a crucial starting point after previous experiences. The work stood out for its innovative proposal, blending poetic lyrics with the visceral sound of hardcore and the striking aesthetic of long hair, in a scenario where such characteristics were not yet fully understood. The urgency that permeates the album is evident both in the recording, carried out in a hurry, and in the cover, which suffered censorship. These elements, instead of being obstacles, became symbols of the intensity and pioneering character of a work that dared to go beyond the conventions of the time, consolidating Dorsal Atlântica's trailblazing identity.

Context

Dorsal Atlântica emerged in 1981, in Rio de Janeiro, during a period of dictatorship in Brazil, being one of the bands that paved the way for national thrash metal. Before Antes do Fim, the group had already released the split Ultimatum in 1985, consolidating its presence in a scene that was beginning to emerge with the support of outlets such as Rádio Fluminense and the venue Circo Voador. At the end of 1985, a strategic change in the band's line-up occurred, driven by the search for greater speed and refinement of musical ideas, preparing the ground for the intense and direct grace of their first solo LP.

Recording

The recording of Antes do Fim took place in 1986, under the label of a São Paulo-based record company. The process was remarkably swift, characterised by having been 'done in a hurry', which imprinted a sense of urgency and spontaneity on the final work.

Legacy

Officially, Antes do Fim sold 3,000 copies, although the company responsible for pressing the vinyl reported sales exceeding 10,000, figures which were not passed on to the band. Despite the commercial controversies, the album was widely recognised by critics, being elected one of the best of the year. The launch shows between Rio, São Paulo and Minas Gerais attracted a significant audience that seemed in tune with the band's proposal, resulting in sold-out performances. The year of its release culminated with Dorsal Atlântica opening the first international underground show in the country, sharing the stage with Venom and Exciter at Maracanãzinho, an event that, despite the positive reception among fans, still faced incomprehension from part of the press at the time.
