Why This Album Matters

Released in 1973, the album Missa breve, officially titled Edu Lobo, represents a fundamental milestone in Edu Lobo's career and in Brazilian music, consolidating his incessant pursuit of perfect harmony. It is a work distinguished by its singular sound, which transcends bossa nova, entering a post-bossa universe with regional influences from the Brazilian Northeast and arrangements of impressive complexity. The record is a declaration of free will and a testament to Edu Lobo's talent as an arranger and composer. Its experimental yet accessible, refined, and aesthetically brilliant approach makes it one of the artist's most expressive works. The prominence of classical guitar, with modal passages and challenging arabesque rhythms, is a central characteristic that defines the album's innovative style. Missa breve is frequently cited as one of the most important Brazilian albums, praised for its ability to be experimental without being inaccessible, and cultured without being condescending. Its intricate sonic tapestry, which blends folkloric and regional roots with melodic and harmonic sophistication, places it in a prominent position in both national and international discographies.

Context

The album Edu Lobo, popularly known as Missa breve, marks Edu Lobo's return to Brazil in 1973, following a four-year period in the United States, where he had travelled in 1969. During his stay abroad, Lobo sought to deepen his musical studies, also becoming an arranger and orchestrator. This earlier phase included an attempt to break into the Anglophone market with the album "Sergio Mendes Presents Edu Lobo", which, however, did not achieve the expected success. This setback prompted the artist to return to Brazil with a renewed vision, determined to concentrate on his unique musical identity, already emerging as a leading exponent of MPB that arose during the festival era of the second half of the 1960s.

Recording

The production of the album Missa breve was overseen by Milton Miranda and Dori Caymmi, with musical direction by maestro Lindolfo Gaya. The elaborate arrangements, which lend the record its complexity and sonic richness, were created by Edu Lobo himself. The recordings featured a notable cast of musicians, including Danilo Caymmi (flute, choir, and percussion), Tenório Júnior (piano and electric piano), Novelli (double bass), Nelson Angelo (12-string guitar and electric guitar), Rubinho Moreira (drums and tumbadora), and Fernando Leporace (vocals and electric bass). Additional contributions came from Paulo Moura (alto saxophone), Edmundo Maciel (trombone), Maurício (trumpet), Aurino Ferreira de Oliveira (baritone saxophone), and Dom Salvador (organ). The choir on several tracks was enriched by the voices of Quarteto em Cy, with Cynara, Cyva, and Dorinha Tapajós, as well as Sônia Burnier and Ruy Faria. The recording technical team included Nivaldo, Toninho, and Zilmar Araújo, who contributed to the album's distinctive sound.

Songs

The album is divided into two distinct and complementary parts. Side A presents five more accessible songs, many of them unreleased at the time, which function as a natural evolution of Lobo's songwriting from the 1960s. Highlights include "Vento Bravo" (a partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro), with its distinctive rhythm, and "Viola Fora de Moda" (with Capinan), which displays intense acoustic guitar passages, establishing Edu Lobo as a musical heir to Heitor Villa-Lobos. "Zanga, Zangada" (with Ronaldo Bastos) is notable for its undeniable sophistication. Side B, which gave the record its popular name, is entirely dedicated to the liturgical suite Missa breve, composed by Edu Lobo. The five tracks of this suite: "Kyrie", "Gloria", "Incelensa" (with Ruy Guerra), "Oremus", and "Libera-nos", reinterpret religious themes with the authorial freedom of a popular composer. The track "Oremus" features vocal participation from Milton Nascimento, while "Kyrie" and "Gloria" are enriched by the vocals of Quarteto em Cy.

Legacy

Missa breve is widely considered one of the most relevant and sought-after albums in Edu Lobo's discography, solidifying his position as a central figure in the evolution of post-bossa nova MPB. The record is praised for its compositional complexity and sophistication, reiterating the artist's mastery in the pursuit of perfect harmony and originality. Over the years, the album has maintained its relevance and has been the subject of several re-releases. It had remastered CD editions in 1994, 1995, and 1996, and more recently, an official vinyl reissue in March 2026. The enduring demand for the record in the collectors' market is evidenced by the high resale values of its vinyl copies.
