Why This Album Matters

The album Sonho 70, released in 1970, emerged during a defining period in Egberto Gismonti's career, marking his deep immersion in musical research and the consolidation of a singular style. Shortly after his studies in dodecaphonic music and musical analysis in France, Gismonti already demonstrated an innovative approach, directing his production towards an increasingly authorial and instrumental sound. This work fits into that experimental phase, where the artist began to forge the complex language that would make him one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, blending European erudite influences with elements from the cultural roots of Brazil.

Context

The release of Sonho 70 occurred at a moment of transition and effervescence for Egberto Gismonti. Having participated in a TV Globo festival with the song "O Sonho" in 1968, he departed for France in 1969 to deepen his knowledge of dodecaphonic music with Jean Barraqué and musical analysis with Nadia Boulanger. In the same year, he released his first album and acted as arranger and conductor for Marie Laforêt. The 1970s would see Gismonti dedicating himself almost exclusively to instrumental music, and the initial reception of his innovative style in Brazil would lead him to seek out European labels to release his subsequent works.
