Why This Album Matters

Em Pleno Verão is Elis Regina's ninth studio album, released in 1971, which further solidifies her position as one of the greatest interpreters of Brazilian music. The record presents a curated selection of songs that traverse different styles and composers, reaffirming the artist's versatility and vocal depth. With a perceptive repertoire selection, the album demonstrates Elis's ability to imbue established and emerging compositions with life and new dimension. Her unique and emotive interpretation is the common thread that elevates each track, making it a prominent example of her discography and of MPB from that period.

Context

In the album's release year, 1971, Brazil was living under a military dictatorship, a period of strong repression and censorship. Elis Regina, a prominent and vocal figure, was targeted with accusations by agents of the regime. She was accused of involvement with the Black Panthers because of the song "Black is Beautiful", an allegation vehemently denied by the singer.

Recording

The album Em Pleno Verão was recorded at the Companhia Brasileira de Discos (C.B.D.) studios in Rio de Janeiro. Production was overseen by Nelson Motta, while Roberto Menescal took on studio direction. Arrangements were handled by Chiquinho de Moraes, and Marco Mazzola served as the recording engineer. The album cover's graphic design was conceived by Aldo Luiz, complementing the visual identity of the work released by Philips Records in 1971.

Songs

The repertoire of Em Pleno Verão is notable for the diversity of its composers and the power of Elis's interpretations. Among the standout tracks is "Madalena", a composition by Ivan Lins and Ronaldo Monteiro that gained considerable prominence, being included in the soundtrack for the telenovela A Próxima Atração and performed in Rede Globo's show Som Livre Exportação. Other significant songs include "Cinema Olympia", written by Caetano Veloso, "Aviso aos Navegantes", by Baden Powell and Paulo César Pinheiro, and the inclusion of a version of "Golden Slumbers", a classic by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song "Black is Beautiful" also features, highlighting the album's cultural and social relevance within the context of the era.

Elis Regina: Doce de Pimenta

2007

She mesmerised the crowd. The first sight would rapidly disappear and anyone who would get closer would also be surprised. It is not known if she did it for "beauty or precision", as Guimarães Rosa used to say. But the truth is that stereotypes would be destroyed as soon as she would fetch her followers. And revelations would unfold. Behind her suavely acute and toned voice, there was a deep tone that only few could reach. Behind her humble upbringing, there was an uncommon sensibility and intelligence. Her disguise was her irrepressible technique. Elis was pure emotion. And singing was not her final objective, she really wanted to make people happy. This film honours Elis and creates a singular portrait of Brazil's biggest star.

Elis Regina: Falso Brilhante

2007

Elis was complete, she had all the attributes which differentiated simple artists from stars. She could enchant crowds in her albums, concerts and in video. Her music was always associated to the stage, site she mastered with brilliance. Throughout her career, these stages would open to her, from the radio days to the Montreux Jazz Festival. This film shows her magic relationship with stage and audience. And also the Bandeirantes theatre, her last stronghold. There she shone in life with her greatest success in theater, the show 'Falso Brilhante', which is also presented and entitles this film. There her body was veiled and her audience went to meet her for the last time, now for a farewell.
