Elis & Tom
Elis Regina & Tom Jobim
1974

Why This Album Matters
Elis & Tom represents an indelible landmark in Brazilian music, sealing the historic encounter of two of its greatest figures: Elis Regina, the 'Pimentinha' with a vibrant voice, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, the sovereign maestro of bossa nova. Launched in 1974, the album is a work of profound elegance and sophistication, which transcends simple musical recording to establish itself as an unprecedented artistic dialogue. Its essence lies in the restrained and gentle way Elis interprets the genre's classics, often in duet with Jobim, who accompanies her on acoustic guitar or piano, revealing impeccable chemistry between the artists. César Camargo Mariano's arrangements, then Elis's husband, were revolutionary for the era, introducing electric instruments to the bossa nova sound and lending the album a modern guise without losing its melodic and harmonic essence. This fusion of tradition and innovation, coupled with interpretative mastery, makes Elis & Tom an indispensable album for understanding the richness and evolution of MPB, a true musical gift that continues to enchant generations.
After Elis & Tom, to record any of the tracks from that repertoire became an act of daring.

Context
By 1974, Elis Regina already had an established career with twelve albums released, full of hits that had become part of her fixed repertoire. However, her manager at the time, Roberto de Oliveira, perceived that, despite her talent and success, Elis lacked a more comprehensive 'prestige' in the artistic scene, perhaps due to her association with a more commercial scheme and an environment considered apolitical by some. Tom Jobim, in turn, was already a living legend, internationally recognised as one of the pillars of bossa nova and with a global career solidified by recordings with names like Frank Sinatra and the worldwide success of songs like "Garota de Ipanema". However, in Brazil, he faced a period of lesser popularity in his shows. Thus, the collaboration proved strategic for both: Elis seeking critical prestige, and Jobim, a renewed connection with the Brazilian public. The opportunity arose as a gift from the Philips record label to Elis, in commemoration of her ten years under contract, and her desire was to record with Tom Jobim himself.
Recording
The journey for the recording of Elis & Tom began on 20 January 1974, when Elis embarked for Los Angeles, California, accompanied by a high-calibre band of Brazilian musicians, including her husband and pianist César Camargo Mariano, producer Aloísio de Oliveira, guitarist Hélio Delmiro, bassist Luizão, and drummer Paulinho Braga. The recordings were carried out between 22 February and 9 March of the same year at the renowned MGM Studios. The first few days, however, were marked by an atmosphere of insecurity and disagreements, especially from Tom Jobim, who, despite his international prestige, seemed apprehensive about the modernity proposed by César Camargo Mariano's arrangements. Elis Regina also expressed frustration, even considering returning to Brazil. The tension, however, significantly dissipated after Mariano finalised the arrangement for "Corcovado", the first song to be completed. From then on, the synergy between the artists blossomed, with Jobim praising Elis's memory of his repertoire. The MGM studios even became crowded with curious musicians, evidencing the interest generated by this musical encounter. To enrich the sound, Mariano invited a string sextet and a flute quartet. The album's final mixing was also César Camargo Mariano's responsibility, in an exhaustive effort that culminated in Jobim's emotion upon hearing the final result. He would later confess his astonishment and admiration for the "new information, brought by the young people", which transformed his perspective and reconnected him with musical modernity.
Songs
Elis & Tom features a musical structure that blends the timelessness of bossa nova with innovative arrangements, led by César Camargo Mariano. The album's sound stands out for the alternation between acoustic and electric piano, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar, lending a fresh guise to genre classics. Songs such as "Só Tinha de Ser Com Você", "Triste", "Brigas, Nunca Mais", and "Fotografia" maintain Elis's lightness and relaxed vocal, with syncopated drums and bossa nova chords on the acoustic guitar. The opening track, "Águas de Março", deserves special mention, as its duet version on this album is widely considered the definitive one, solidifying its status as one of the album's and the Brazilian songbook's biggest successes. Other tracks like "Retrato em Branco e Preto" and "Modinha" (the only one entirely arranged by Jobim) explore a more dramatic mood, where Jobim's piano and the orchestra accompany Elis's expressive vocal. Meanwhile, "Chovendo na Roseira" and "Corcovado" reveal Jobim singing muffled or in choruses, with arrangements of flutes and strings that evoke a sensual and melancholic atmosphere. The album is concluded by the jazz ballad "Inútil Paisagem", considered a song of great interpretative challenge. Elis sings it only with Jobim's piano accompaniment, who also whispers parts of the lyrics, just as in "O Que Tinha de Ser". Elis's performance on this track is critically acclaimed, elevating the album to a level of excellence and ensuring a conclusion that leaves the listener fully satisfied with the rich musical experience.

In my ten years at the record label (then Philips), I was given the gift of a meeting with Tom (Jobim). These were moments lived by two very tense people who only managed to relax through music.

Legacy
Elis & Tom was a resounding success in both sales and critical reception, exceeding the expectations of the record label and the artists themselves. The album established itself as one of the best-selling Brazilian music albums of all time, according to Billboard, and its relevance endures to this day, remaining present on the digital platform sales charts, such as Brazilian iTunes, even decades after its release. The album's impact was immediate and transformative for Elis Regina, who returned to Brazil with exceptionally high morale and noticed a change in her audience, who, although initially surprised by this new phase, embraced the proposition. To promote the work, Elis and Tom performed historic concerts in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which not only celebrated the album but also reignited Tom Jobim's figure for new generations, reaffirming his importance in the musical scene. The critical and public reception was unanimously positive, classifying the shows as "historic". Over the years, Elis & Tom has been widely referenced in important music books, compendiums, and encyclopaedias, both in Brazil and internationally. In 2007, journalists and music critics elected it as the 11th best Brazilian music album in a Rolling Stone magazine list, a testament to its lasting recognition. The special re-release in 2004, on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary, reinforces the album's continued acclaim by musicians and critics worldwide.
