Why This Album Matters

Trem Azul is a milestone in Elis Regina's discography, being her eighth live album and the second to be released posthumously, in 1982, by Som Livre. This work stands out not only for capturing the performing essence of 'Pimentinha', but also for its unusual origin: a mono cassette tape recording of a show held at the Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi, in São Paulo, in October 1981. The album's uniqueness lies precisely in its genesis and the dedication employed to transform it. It offers a window into a live performance by Elis, even if mediated by a complex technical process, which sought to elevate the quality of an informal recording to an official release, demonstrating the artist's continued relevance and talent.

Recording

The concept behind Trem Azul originated from a mono cassette tape recording of Elis Regina's show in October 1981, at the Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi. For the material to be released with compatible quality, the tape underwent a series of intensive sound treatments, aiming to convert the original mono audio into stereo. The album's production was overseen by Max Pierre and Rogério Costa, with musical direction by Nathan Marques, who also performed as a guitarist at the show. The post-production process was fundamental to the album's existence, giving it its final sound.

Legacy

Trem Azul achieved remarkable success after its release, selling over 120,000 copies in Brazil and securing a gold record for the singer. Beyond its commercial success, the album received significant critical acclaim, being honoured with an award granted by the Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte (APCA) specifically for the innovative treatment given to the original recording. The enduring relevance of the album is evidenced by its re-release on streaming platforms on 17 March 2023, a year that would have marked Elis Regina's 78th birthday, proving that her work remains alive and accessible to new generations.

Elis Regina: Doce de Pimenta

2007

She mesmerised the crowd. The first sight would rapidly disappear and anyone who would get closer would also be surprised. It is not known if she did it for "beauty or precision", as Guimarães Rosa used to say. But the truth is that stereotypes would be destroyed as soon as she would fetch her followers. And revelations would unfold. Behind her suavely acute and toned voice, there was a deep tone that only few could reach. Behind her humble upbringing, there was an uncommon sensibility and intelligence. Her disguise was her irrepressible technique. Elis was pure emotion. And singing was not her final objective, she really wanted to make people happy. This film honours Elis and creates a singular portrait of Brazil's biggest star.

Elis Regina: Falso Brilhante

2007

Elis was complete, she had all the attributes which differentiated simple artists from stars. She could enchant crowds in her albums, concerts and in video. Her music was always associated to the stage, site she mastered with brilliance. Throughout her career, these stages would open to her, from the radio days to the Montreux Jazz Festival. This film shows her magic relationship with stage and audience. And also the Bandeirantes theatre, her last stronghold. There she shone in life with her greatest success in theater, the show 'Falso Brilhante', which is also presented and entitles this film. There her body was veiled and her audience went to meet her for the last time, now for a farewell.
