Why This Album Matters

A Mulher do Fim do Mundo represents a notable turning point in Elza Soares' discography, acclaimed by critics as a true "renaissance" in the career of the already legendary singer. Released in 2015, this thirty-second studio album consolidated a new phase for Elza, demonstrating unprecedented artistic vitality and daring. Its critical reception, both national and international, solidified it as one of the great albums of the year and the decade, with renowned publications celebrating its originality and the artist's visceral performance. The project stands out for its audacious fusion of genres, transitioning between samba, rock, rap, and electronic music, creating a sound that Celso Sim, one of the composers, nicknamed "punk-samba". The eleven songs address forceful and current themes, such as domestic violence, urban suffering, transsexuality, and blackness, revealing the rawness and strength that permeate Elza Soares' life and work. It is a work that not only celebrates the artist's capacity for overcoming adversity, but also positions her as an incisive and relevant voice for contemporary challenges.

Context

The album A Mulher do Fim do Mundo emerged from a significant change of direction compared to the initial idea. Producer Guilherme Kastrup had planned a project to reinterpret classic sambas performed by Elza Soares, with arrangements by a group of musicians more connected to rock and influenced by various urban genres such as punk and reggae. However, the vision evolved into an album of completely unreleased songs, dedicated to Elza's voice and life story. The eponymous title track, composed by Rômulo Fróes and Alice Coutinho, reflects this deep connection with the singer's trajectory, transforming the project into a mirror of Elza Soares' experiences and resilience, as she defined herself as a phoenix, always being reborn.

Recording

The gestation of A Mulher do Fim do Mundo began to be publicly noticed in December 2014, when critic Mauro Ferreira announced that Elza Soares planned two albums for the following year, one of them under the direction of Guilherme Kastrup. Kastrup gathered a notable constellation of artists from the "contemporary São Paulo scene", including Cacá Machado, Celso Sim, Kiko Dinucci, Marcelo Cabral, Rodrigo Campos, and Romulo Fróes, to collaborate on the new compositions and arrangements. With the sponsorship of Natura Musical, rehearsals for the album began in the third week of April 2015 at Toca studio, in São Paulo. Main recordings were carried out between April and May of the same year at Red Bull Studios, in the São Paulo capital, with Rodrigo "Funai" Costa and Marcelo Guerreiro on engineering. Additional recordings took place at Toca do Tatu studios, in São Paulo, and Estúdio Ciatec, in Rio de Janeiro. The final mixing and mastering phase was divided between Victor Rice, at Estúdio Copam in São Paulo, and Felipe Tichauer, at Red Traxx Mastering in Miami, Florida, ensuring a production of international scope.

Songs

The eleven tracks on A Mulher do Fim do Mundo are a thematic and sonic mosaic, frankly addressing complex themes such as sex, death, blackness, and the harsh reality of domestic violence. Composed by a collective of new São Paulo artists, the lyrics and melodies delve into an aesthetic that Celso Sim described as "punk-samba", due to its intriguing fusion of samba with rock, rap, and electronic music. Among the standout songs, "Maria da Vila Matilde", released as the first single, is a samba de breque with distorted arrangements that satirises violence against women in Brazil. "Luz Vermelha" offers a vision of "the apocalypse cut into scenes of the periphery, gunfights, empty streets", while the poem "Coração do Mar", by Oswald de Andrade set to music by José Miguel Wisnik, is described as "a birth in every syllable". The track "Pra Fuder" was praised for showing Elza singing about her own desires, breaking with conventions and presenting a Brazil beyond the postcard image.

Legacy

A Mulher do Fim do Mundo was met with unanimous critical acclaim, both nationally and internationally, celebrated as a landmark in Elza Soares' career and in contemporary Brazilian music. Renowned publications such as O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo, The Guardian, Pitchfork, NPR, and The New York Times lavished praise on the work, highlighting its originality, courage, and the artist's visceral performance. The album won the 2016 Latin Grammy in the Best MPB Album category, solidifying its global recognition. Pitchfork magazine, for example, named it "Best New Album" and one of the best of 2016, stating that "Elza Soares made the album of her life". The New York Times included it among the ten best of the year, alongside names like Beyoncé and David Bowie, and the British newspaper The Guardian crowned it "Brazilian album of the year". Its influence and impact were reaffirmed in 2022, when it was voted one of the best Brazilian music albums of the last 40 years in an O Globo newspaper poll with 25 specialists. Commercial repercussions were also significant, with over nine million streams on Spotify, and the album also led Elza Soares to perform for the first time at the prestigious Rock in Rio festival.
