Why This Album Matters

Elza Soares, Baterista: Wilson das Neves represents a fundamental milestone in singer Elza Soares' discography, being her tenth studio album and the only complete collaboration with the iconic musician Wilson das Neves. Released in 1968 by Odeon, with musical production by Lyrio Panicali, this singular work captured a phase of expressive artistic maturity from the performer. The album is celebrated for its sound and the fusion of Elza's talent with Wilson das Neves' rhythmic expertise, elements that consolidated it as one of the most important titles in her career during the 1960s. In it, the singer demonstrates complete musical mastery, solidifying her position as one of the great voices of Brazilian music.

Context

Prior to this notable collaboration, Elza Soares had already explored successful partnerships, such as the album Elza, Miltinho e Samba, recorded in 1967 with singer Miltinho, marking her first artistic union documented on disc. The following year, the singer joined forces with Wilson das Neves, an already renowned drummer, a member of the group Os Ipanemas and with stints in other important samba-jazz formations, such as Os Gatos and Os Catedráticos.

Recording

The album's production followed the tradition of Elza's previous works, being conducted by maestro Lyrio Panicali, with artistic direction by Milton Miranda. The orchestrations were handled by maestro Nilsinho, who contributed to the characteristic sound of the record. The repertoire was carefully selected, comprising re-recordings of celebrated successes in Brazilian music. Among the tracks, some had already been interpreted by Elza, such as "Mulata Assanhada" and "Se Acaso Você Chegasse", while other classics, such as "Garota de Ipanema" and "Saudade da Bahia", gained new versions.

Legacy

Originally released on vinyl in 1968 by Odeon, Elza Soares, Baterista: Wilson das Neves consolidated itself over time as one of the most relevant albums in Elza Soares' trajectory during the 60s. In 2022, journalist Flavio de Mattos highlighted the work as a moment when the singer achieved her most complete musical maturity. The album's posthumous recognition manifested itself in significant re-releases. In 2002, the album was released for the first time on CD, as part of the series "Odeon - 100 Anos de Música no Brasil", under the curation of Charles Gavin. The following year, it was included in the Negra collection box set, re-edited by Marcelo Fróes, who added four bonus tracks, originally individual singles from the era. In a remarkable tribute, Wilson das Neves and Elza Soares reunited in 2015, 47 years after the release, for a show at Sesc Vila Mariana, in São Paulo, performing the album's repertoire. Furthermore, Elza Soares revisited "Balanço Zona Sul", one of the project's tracks, re-recording it in 2022 on the album Elza ao Vivo no Municipal.
