Why This Album Matters

The album Emílio Santiago, released in 1975 by the CID record label, represents singer Emílio Santiago's discographic debut in LP format. This inaugural work introduced the artist's unique voice to the public, presenting a carefully curated repertoire of "forgotten" songs by celebrated Brazilian music composers. With the selection of works by names such as Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, João Donato, Jorge Ben, Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, Durval Ferreira, João Nogueira, Paulo César Pinheiro, Marcos Valle and Paulo Sérgio Valle, the record set the tone for Santiago's musical trajectory, marked by refined interpretation and the appreciation of a songbook of high artistic merit.

Context

Prior to the release of his first LP, Emílio Santiago already had a rising musical trajectory. During the 1960s, whilst studying Law, the singer already stood out at student festivals, winning several competitions and attracting the attention of figures such as Beth Carvalho. His experience included performances as a crooner in Ed Lincoln's orchestra, as well as appearances in nightclubs and renowned auditorium programmes, such as Flávio Cavalcanti's. In 1973, he had already released a compact through Polydor, featuring the songs "Transa de amor" and "Saravá Nega", which ensured him greater visibility on radio and television programmes, preparing the ground for his album debut.

Songs

The main highlight of the album Emílio Santiago lies in its proposal to rescue and reinterpret "forgotten songs" by an impressive roster of Brazilian composers. The curation of the repertoire revealed the singer's refined musical taste, bringing to light gems by Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, João Donato, Jorge Ben, Nelson Cavaquinho, Guilherme de Brito, Durval Ferreira, João Nogueira, Paulo César Pinheiro, Marcos Valle and Paulo Sérgio Valle. This focus on high-quality compositions and the appreciation of Brazilian musical memory would become a hallmark of Emílio Santiago's career.
