In it, Erasmo Carlos, a perpetual student of rock'n'roll, influenced by icons such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard, indulged his primal instincts, resulting in an LP "sufficiently psychedelic and diffuse". This work is considered a pillar within the Brazilian rock scene and a notable, albeit late, entry into the Tropicalista tradition.

Context

The album Carlos, Erasmo symbolised a significant shift in Erasmo Carlos's career, coming shortly after the peak of his success with Jovem Guarda. After leaving his previous record label, RGE, the artist sought new horizons for his musical expression at Philips, during a period of cultural effervescence in Brazil. In the 70s, Erasmo Carlos signed with Polydor, and his shows distanced themselves from the Jovem Guarda movement. Influenced by hippie counterculture and soul music, he released this album. This phase marked his evolution from a teenage idol to a sophisticated seventies singer and songwriter, embracing the artistic freedom of the global counterculture of the late sixties and early seventies.

Recording

The recording of Carlos, Erasmo featured a true "all-star selection" from the Brazilian music scene of the time, many of them associated with the Tropicália movement. The album was co-produced by Manoel Barenbein, a renowned Tropicalista producer, and included arrangements by Rogério Duprat, an emblematic figure of Tropicália. Erasmo Carlos is also credited as co-producer of the album, alongside Nelson Motta on some tracks. For the recording sessions, Erasmo was accompanied by heavyweight talents, such as Sergio Dias (guitar), Dinho Leme (drums), and Liminha (bass), all members of Os Mutantes. In addition to them, Alexander Gordin, known as "Lanny", a recognised master of Brazilian psychedelic guitar, also participated. The recordings were made in studios such as CBD, Estúdios Prova, and Estúdios RCA in São Paulo. The work even includes a new composition by Caetano Veloso, "De Noite na Cama", which opens the album and has been described as a controversial ode to marijuana, reflecting the spirit of the era.

Songs

The songs on Carlos, Erasmo reveal an Erasmo Carlos in full experimentation and maturation, addressing themes of behaviour and freedom. Although most tracks are composed in partnership with Roberto Carlos, the album also features significant collaborations with other major names in Brazilian music. "De Noite na Cama", by Caetano Veloso, opens the album with an introspective and poetic atmosphere. "É Preciso Dar um Jeito, Meu Amigo", a partnership with Roberto Carlos, is another highlight that, with its striking lyrics and melody, captures the essence of the resistance of that period. The track "Gente Aberta" also stands out, with its message of inclusion and celebration of diversity. The album also explores songs with a blend of rock, soul, funk, and pop, and even a "marijuana ode" driven by marimba.

Legacy

Carlos, Erasmo solidified its place in the history of Brazilian music, being consistently recognised in important rankings. Rolling Stone Brasil magazine ranked it 31st on its list of the 100 greatest Brazilian music albums, making it the only Erasmo Carlos album to feature. In a poll conducted by the Discoteca Básica podcast, with the participation of over 160 music specialists, the album reached 19th position on the list of the 500 greatest Brazilian music albums, the best placement for an Erasmo work in the survey. The album's lasting impact was recently evidenced when the song "É Preciso Dar um Jeito, Meu Amigo" was included in the soundtrack of Walter Salles' 2024 film Ainda Estou Aqui. Its inclusion in the feature film, the first Brazilian film to win an Oscar, boosted the song's popularity, taking it to the streaming charts in Brazil and demonstrating the continuous relevance of Erasmo Carlos's work in Brazilian culture.
