Why This Album Matters

Essa tal de Gang 90 & Absurdettes marks the phonographic debut of a group that became a turning point in Brazilian music, being the only full-album recording featuring the charismatic leader Júlio Barroso. This work stands out as a precursor to the New Wave movement in Brazil, not only for its sound but also for the visual aesthetic that accompanied it. Across its ten tracks, the record distils a unique combination of good humour, mockery, and an approach that embraces disposable pop culture, all permeated by an undeniable Tropicalista influence. The striking presence of a female choir, inspired by the style of the group B-52s, adds a distinctive layer to its sound and musical identity.

Context

The album's release was driven by the remarkable success of the single "Perdidos na Selva", released in 1981, which opened the doors for the group to produce their first LP. This moment represented the consolidation of Gang 90 & Absurdettes in the Brazilian music scene.

Recording

The album's recording process featured a cast of talented musicians who contributed to the project's sonic richness. Among them, notable names include Guilherme Arantes and Luiz Paulo Simas on keyboards, Gigante Brazil on drums, and Wander Taffo from Rádio Táxi, adding his solo guitar to tracks such as "Eu sei, mas eu não sei" and "Convite ao prazer". Albino Infantozzi also contributed on drums for the track "Telefone".

Songs

Among the ten tracks that comprise the record, several songs became emblematic and reaffirmed the work's value. "Nosso Louco Amor" gained great popularity as the theme of the soap opera "Louco Amor", broadcast by Rede Globo in 1983. Other highlights include "Telefone" and "Noite e dia", the latter a partnership between Júlio Barroso and Lobão. "Perdidos na Selva", which introduced the group to the wider public at the Festival MPB Shell 81, is also one of the album's central pieces.

The critic Júlio Barroso spotted the future of Brazilian rock before anyone else. At the MPB-81 festival, leading the group Gang 90 & Absurdettes, he left the Maracanãzinho audience astonished by the performative "Perdidos na selva".
