Why This Album Matters

Coisa de Louco II is the first CD by Graforréia Xilarmônica, an alternative rock band from Porto Alegre formed in 1985. Inspired by Jovem Guarda and 1960s foreign rock, the group forged an original, humorous, and carefree sound, also incorporating elements of traditional Gaúcho music. The work reflects the band's originality, which stands out in the national scene for its unique approach. With influences ranging from New Wave to Arrigo Barnabé, from 'brega' music to Gaúcho regionalism and avant-garde classical music, Graforréia Xilarmônica presents an ironic and irreverent streak. According to its members, the intention was never to create something merely funny, but rather to seek out 'brasilidade' in their own way, clearly differentiating themselves from the mainstream and consolidating their position as one of Brazil's foremost cult bands.

Context

Before the release of Coisa de Louco II, Graforréia Xilarmônica, formed by Frank Jorge, Marcelo Birck, and Alexandre Birck, already had a peculiar trajectory. Since its foundation in 1985, the band, whose name was humorously and randomly chosen from a dictionary, operated irregularly due to its members' parallel activities, despite already having a fan club. The group's unexpected popularisation, driven by performances outside the state and the inclusion of songs in compilations such as A Vez do Brasil and A Música de Porto Alegre: Rock, led to their contract with Banguela Records. In 1994, the band had received the prestigious Prêmio Açorianos de Música in the Best Musical Group category, an acknowledgement that preceded the recording of their debut album. Songs like "Eu" already enjoyed widespread airplay on local radio stations, preparing the ground for the release of their first CD amidst growing, albeit informal, notoriety.

Recording

Coisa de Louco II was recorded in 1995, marking Graforréia Xilarmônica's debut in CD format. The album was produced by the Banguela Records label, which, at the time, was a platform for artists from the Brazilian alternative scene. Thomas Dreher was the studio engineer responsible for the recording, an important name in sound engineering for works within the Gaúcho and Brazilian music scene.

Songs

Coisa de Louco II features songs that became milestones in Graforréia Xilarmônica's discography. The music video for "Você Foi Embora" had significant repercussions on MTV Brasil, increasing the group's visibility. The album includes classics such as "Bagaceiro Chinelão" and "Amigo Punk", the latter composed in 1987 and recognised as one of the band's major hits. The album's lyrics are notable for their rich references, spanning cinema, literature, comic books, cartoons, and various regionalisms. Graforréia Xilarmônica is characterised by a tendency towards humour, parody, and nonsense, using jokes and regionalisms which, although complex for outsiders, consolidate an identity linked to the so-called 'aesthetics of chinelagem'.

Legacy

Although the release of Coisa de Louco II coincided with the beginning of Banguela Records' deactivation, which hindered its distribution and promotion, the band embarked on a tour across several cities in Rio Grande do Sul, receiving an excellent reception. The album, and particularly the song "Amigo Punk", which was nominated as best song at the 1999 Prêmio Açorianos de Música and re-recorded by Wander Wildner, consolidated the group as an 'affective anthem of the Gaúcho capital'. The former director of Banguela Records, Carlos Eduardo Miranda, attested to the album's importance, considering Graforréia Xilarmônica a band that 'envisioned much of the future' and which, over time, would become cult, inspiring groups such as Los Hermanos and Pato Fu. The band from Minas Gerais, Pato Fu, even re-recorded the songs "Nunca Diga" and "Eu", with the music video for the latter receiving the MTV Vídeo Music Brasil award. In 2023, Coisa de Louco II was recognised in a literary context, being included in the book 100 Grandes Álbuns do Rock Gaúcho: Influências e vertentes.
