Why This Album Matters

Chromophobia marks the debut of Brazilian electronic music producer Gui Boratto, released on 26 February 2007 by the Kompakt label. This debut album quickly established itself as a significant work in the electronic music scene, offering a distinctive sound that would come to define the artist's musical identity. The album's title, Chromophobia, was explained by Boratto as a reference to monochrome in architecture, symbolising simplicity. However, he also points to an irony in the name, highlighting that, despite the suggestion, his music is inherently colourful, vibrant, and full of nuances, inviting the listener to a rich and multifaceted auditory experience.

Recording

The sound conception of Chromophobia relied on Gui Boratto's versatility; he not only signed off on the album's production, engineering, mastering, and mixing, but also contributed instrumentally, playing guitar and piano. The vocal dimension of the work was entirely entrusted to the talented Luciana Villanova, whose interpretations enrich the compositions with her voice.

Legacy

The relevance of Chromophobia was recognised by specialist critics, with it being elected the 43rd best album of the decade by Resident Advisor.
