Why This Album Matters

The album Canto Negro, born from the cultural effervescence of Ilê Aiyê, Brazil's first Afro bloc, emerges as a sonic testament to rich African-derived culture. Its sound is profoundly marked by vibrant percussion and a Black choir that chants ancestral songs and rhythms, elements intrinsic to the group's proposal to expand and value African heritage in Brazil. The work, therefore, is special because it is a musical expression that transcends entertainment, functioning as a vehicle for cultural affirmation and the celebration of Black identity. In this way, the album deserves attention not only for its engaging musicality, but also for embodying the essence of a movement born to combat racism and promote the self-worth of the Afro-Brazilian community. Through its tracks, the listener is invited to delve into an experience that is, at once, artistic and socially engaged, reflecting Ilê Aiyê's mission to preserve and expand Afro-Brazilian culture.

Context

Ilê Aiyê, the birthplace of the album Canto Negro, was founded on 1 November 1974, in the Curuzu neighbourhood of Salvador, by Antônio Carlos dos Santos and Apolônio de Jesus, with the innovative proposal of being a Black bloc. Its first appearance at Carnaval occurred in 1975. The group's creation challenged the concept of racial democracy in Brazil, generating criticism and even accusations of 'racist bloc' and 'subversive intentions' from the Bahian press and the Federal Police, who prevented its initial name 'Poder Negro'. The history of Ilê Aiyê is intrinsically linked to the terreiro Ilê Axé Jitolu and to the ialorixá Mãe Hilda, who for two decades served as the bloc's centre of operations, consolidating its cultural and religious base.

Legacy

Ilê Aiyê's trajectory, and by extension that of works like Canto Negro, consolidated it as a heritage of Bahian culture and a fundamental landmark in the process of re-Africanisation of Bahia's Carnaval. Beyond its musical and festive relevance, the group stands out as an entity of Black militancy. Its influence is manifest in continuous actions to value Afro-Brazilian culture and combat racism. Ilê Aiyê, with its several recorded albums and frequent international tours, demonstrates the lasting impact of its cultural and social proposal, establishing a legacy of resistance, celebration, and affirmation of Black identity.

É a partir deste elemento que "Ilê Aiyê" se destaca, se distingue dos demais, e se torna pilar crucial na preservação e, ainda mais, na propagação e valorização da cultura negra ancestral, e portanto, brasileira.
