Why This Album Matters

The album Caipira de Fato, released in 1997, represents a remarkable encounter between two emblematic figures of traditional Brazilian music: Inezita Barroso and Roberto Corrêa. This collaboration is significant for uniting Inezita Barroso's legendary voice and authority in the caipira universe with Roberto Corrêa's mastery and innovation on the viola. Roberto Corrêa, a virtuoso viola player, composer, and researcher, is recognised for his ability to fuse the deep musical traditions of the countryside with a contemporary and erudite approach to the instrument. Alongside Inezita Barroso, one of the genre's greatest interpreters, the album offers an authentic immersion into the caipira universe, honouring its roots while exploring the artistic potential of the viola. The title, in itself, reinforces the commitment to cultural genuineness.

Context

Roberto Corrêa, one of the leading exponents of the viola caipira, comes from a family of viola players and dedicated himself fully to the instrument after starting out on the classical guitar. Based in Brasília since 1975, the artist holds degrees in Physics and Music from UnB, which reflects his technical as well as cultural approach to the viola. Before Caipira de Fato, Corrêa already had a consolidated trajectory of research and performance, having released several albums and performed internationally. He is also the author of important theoretical works on the instrument.
