Why This Album Matters
O Samba Na Voz Do Sambista, released in 1955, is an essential and historic record that offers a direct connection with Ismael Silva, one of the most seminal figures in the creation and solidification of Rio de Janeiro urban samba. This album stands out for presenting the composer himself performing his works, a rarity at a time when many of his sambas were popularised by other artists. Across its eight tracks, the record reveals Ismael's rhythmic genius, whose innovations were crucial in making samba more suitable for parades and dancing, marking a fundamental transition in the genre. It captures the essence of his musical language, which transitions between 'malandragem' (a cunning, street-smart way of life), bohemianism, and sharp observation of everyday life, elements that defined the soul of samba.
Context
Ismael Silva, born in Niterói in 1905, moved to the Estácio neighbourhood, in Rio de Janeiro, as a child, becoming a key figure in the Rio samba scene. He was one of the founders of the carnival block Deixa Falar in 1928, considered the embryo of the first samba school, and is credited with coining the expression 'escola de samba' (samba school) itself. After a period of great success in the 1920s and 1930s, with notable partnerships such as Francisco Alves and Noel Rosa, Ismael Silva experienced relative obscurity in the 1940s. His resurgence in the artistic scene occurred in the 1950s, propelled by the success of the samba "Antonico". The 1955 album therefore represents Ismael Silva's return to the limelight, recording in his own voice a legacy of compositions that were already classics and had been immortalised by other performers.
Recording
O Samba Na Voz Do Sambista was released in 1955 by the Sinter label as a 10-inch LP. This recording is particularly valuable as it is one of the few in which Ismael Silva, a prolific composer whose works were frequently recorded by other singers, performs his own songs. The texts accompanying the release, the so-called 'liner notes', were written by the poet and diplomat Vinicius de Moraes.
Songs
The album comprises eight tracks, all penned by Ismael Silva, some in partnership. Among the songs featured are classics such as "Se Você Jurar", "Me Diga Teu Nome", "Adeus", "O Que Será de Mim", "Para Me Livrar do Mal", "Sofrer É da Vida", "Novo Amor", and "Nem É Bom Falar". The lyrics of these songs illustrate Ismael Silva's thematic universe, with a strong presence of 'malandragem' and bohemianism. "Se Você Jurar", for example, is an authentic portrayal of 1930s Rio 'malandragem', exploring the tension between bohemian life and the possibility of sincere love. His compositions are notable for their lyrical authenticity and rhythmic innovations that shaped samba to be danceable and suitable for street parades.
Legacy
O Samba Na Voz Do Sambista is universally considered a classic and historic record in Brazilian discography. Ismael Silva is recognised as one of the architects of contemporary urban samba, and his influence extended to a vast range of sambistas who followed him, including names such as Noel Rosa, Ary Barroso, Wilson Baptista, Ataulfo Alves, and Geraldo Pereira. His work is so fundamental that the acclaimed composer Chico Buarque cited him as his greatest musical influence, referring to Ismael as his "true musical father". Although his trajectory was not always marked by great financial success, the cultural impact of Ismael Silva and, by extension, of this album is immeasurable, consolidating its position as one of the 100 best albums in Brazilian music, as widely recognised.
