Why This Album Matters
Vou de Samba com Você, released in 1964, is a seminal album in Jair Rodrigues' discography and a landmark in Brazilian popular music. This work solidified the artist's identity as a vibrant and innovative samba interpreter, injecting a contagious energy and irreverence that would become his trademarks. The album stands out for its fusion of traditional samba with elements that anticipated future trends, presenting a style that was both authentic and audacious.
Context
Before the release of Vou de Samba com Você in 1964, Jair Rodrigues had already been paving his way in the São Paulo music scene. He had participated and excelled in television talent shows, such as "Programa de Cláudio de Luna" on Rádio Cultura, where he won first place. In 1963, he released his first LP, O Samba Como Ele É, which included the song "O Morro Não Tem Vez" by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. Singing in nightclubs, Jair Rodrigues began to build a reputation as a charismatic and energetic performer, preparing the ground for the success that would come with his second album.
Recording
The album Vou de Samba com Você was recorded in 1964, with production by Alfredo Borba. The sessions took place at the Gravodisc studio. Alfredo Borba played a crucial role, including in the launch, by organising a cocktail party to present the LP to Philips' salespeople. The recording of "Deixa Isso Pra Lá", in particular, featured the collaboration of maestro Portinho, considered one of the fathers of modern choro.
Songs
The album is notable for featuring the song "Deixa Isso Pra Lá", one of Jair Rodrigues' greatest hits and a revolutionary track for its time. Composed by Alberto Paz and Edson Menezes, the song became a popular hit due to Jair's charisma and his performance, which included hand choreography, similar to rappers' gestures. The song is widely recognised for having verses that are more spoken than sung, and is considered by many to be a precursor to Brazilian rap. Other tracks include the title song "Vou de Samba Com Você" by João Mello, "Berimbau" by Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes, and "Cara de Pau" by Haroldo Barbosa and Luiz Reis. The lyrics and Jair Rodrigues' interpretations on this album reflect the joy and mischief characteristic of samba, but also the ability to express feelings and social observations in a direct and innovative way.
Legacy
Vou de Samba com Você propelled Jair Rodrigues to national popularity, consolidating him as an MPB star. The success of "Deixa Isso Pra Lá" was tremendous, becoming one of his greatest hits and a song re-recorded by various artists over time. The track's innovation, with its "spoken" verses and Jair's hand choreography, earned him posthumous recognition as a pioneer of national rap, celebrated by hip hop artists in Brazil as early as the 21st century. This album paved the way for Jair Rodrigues' legendary partnership with Elis Regina on TV Record's "O Fino da Bossa" programme, starting in 1965, which definitively marked both artists' place among the great stars of MPB.
