Born in the São Cristóvão neighbourhood and raised in Engenho Novo, Rio de Janeiro, he began his musical career playing the tamborim in the percussion section of Estação Primeira de Mangueira, a samba school for which he would become one of the most iconic samba-enredo performers, taking on the lead vocal role from 1952 onwards. His professional ascent included performances in gafieiras, work in radio, and nightclubs, even acting as a 'chorus singer' for the renowned Francisco Alves. His definitive consecration came as a samba singer, recording for several labels such as Odeon, Companhia Brasileira de Discos, Philips, and, most notably, Continental, where he would release most of his albums, including this tribute to Lupicínio Rodrigues. By 1972, Jamelão was already a respected figure with a vast discography.

All right, so I finally sat down and gave this Jamelão Interpreta Lupicínio Rodrigues album a real listen. Not going to lie, I kind of stumbled on it while digging through old Brazilian samba records, and honestly? It surprised me. It's from 1982 but sounds much older, which is kind of the point I guess.

There is some controversy. So much so that the historic "Roteiro de um Boêmio", an album with four 78 rpm records, recorded in 1952 by Lupicínio with his original vocal, in that very way, cool and subtle, is considered by fans to be the definitive recording by the author of "Se Acaso Você Chegasse".
