Why This Album Matters
Dominguinho is an acoustic and collaborative album that stands out in the Brazilian music scene as a unique gathering of talents. Released on 18 April 2025, the project brings together the acclaimed João Gomes, Jota.pê, and accordionist Mestrinho, in a celebration of Nordestino music and MPB with an atmosphere of lightness and intimacy. With minimalist instrumentation that includes Mestrinho's accordion, Jota.pê's steel-string guitar, Vanutti's guitar, and Gilú Amaral's inventive percussion, the album exudes a welcoming feel, almost like a circle of friends gathering at dusk.
Context
The album Dominguinho emerged from the encounter of three artists with distinct, yet complementary, trajectories. João Gomes quickly rose to fame as the "King of Piseiro," going viral on TikTok and Spotify in 2021 with hits like "Meu Pedaço de Pecado," becoming one of the most listened-to singers in the country. Mestrinho, in turn, is an acclaimed accordionist from Sergipe, frequently referred to as "Dominguinhos' disciple," known for his versatility across rhythms ranging from forró to jazz and MPB. Jota.pê, a rising name in new MPB, had already won multiple Latin Grammy awards before the release of Dominguinho, with his deep voice and intimate compositions that blend hip hop, samba, and soul.
Recording
The recording process for Dominguinho was marked by remarkable spontaneity. Initially planned for just five songs, the trio ended up recording twelve tracks in a relaxed session, without prior rehearsal, "testing songs and choruses" at the Historic Site of Olinda, Pernambuco. This "unusual" approach resulted in an audiovisual project that conveys lightness, 'brasilidade' (Brazilian essence), and good vibes, capturing the energy of a true gathering between friends. The musical direction was collectively overseen by the trio in partnership with Daniel Mendes, while the visual aesthetic bore the signature of Chico Kertész, from Macaco Gordo. Pernambucano photographer Kaio Cads was responsible for the images, prioritising an intimate gaze and colour fidelity, aligned with the atmosphere requested by the album.
Songs
With a repertoire of twelve tracks, Dominguinho presents a creative blend of forró, piseiro, and MPB. The album includes unreleased versions such as the medley "Mete um Block Nele / Ela Tem," which showcases the trio's ability to reinterpret successes, and a surprising reinterpretation of Charlie Brown Jr.'s "Pontes Indestrutíveis," which gains a new acoustic and emotional guise. The work also highlights a striking new song, "Flor," composed by Mestrinho, which emphasises the project's authorial vein. The compositions explore romantic and bucolic themes, with the chemistry between João Gomes' vocals, Mestrinho's instrumental groove, and Jota.pê's MPB sensibility creating an "almost unique" vocal dynamic, where harmony prevails over individual protagonism.
Legacy
Since its release, Dominguinho quickly established itself as a landmark in Brazilian music. The album was acclaimed by critics, being considered one of the best national releases of 2025 and captivating a broad audience, including people unfamiliar with forró. Its repercussion led to the achievement of a Latin Grammy in 2025 in the Best Roots Music Album in Portuguese Language category, solidifying its recognition. The project's success propelled an extensive national and international tour, with sold-out dates in Europe, confirming the high demand for the trio's live performance. The album's popularity and millions of views on digital platforms culminated in the release of a second volume, Dominguinho Vol. 2, recorded in Salvador in May 2026, which expands the original concept with a more danceable, stage-oriented energy.
