Why This Album Matters

Diagonal, released in 1964, is a seminal work by the pianist, singer, and composer Johnny Alf, a figure often revered as one of the founding fathers of Bossa Nova. This album emerges at a crucial period in Brazilian music, representing the ongoing contribution of an artist whose harmonies and melodies were considered revolutionary, paving the way for the genre that would conquer the world. The relevance of 'Diagonal' lies in the consolidation of Johnny Alf's unique style, a master of melodic sophistication and harmonic inventiveness. His music, which drew on both erudition and inspiration from jazz and American soundtracks, offered a singular perspective to the Brazilian musical landscape. The album, therefore, is a testament to the genius of a musician who profoundly shaped the sound that would become Bossa Nova, influencing generations of artists.

Context

Before the release of 'Diagonal', Johnny Alf had already consolidated his position as one of the architects of Bossa Nova. Starting his piano studies in childhood and immersing himself in popular music with influences from jazz and North American cinema, he had already made his professional debut in 1952 as a pianist at Cantina do César. Songs like 'Céu e mar' and 'Rapaz de bem', released in the early 50s, already demonstrated his innovative harmonic and melodic approach, being recognised as precursors of the new musical movement. In the mid-1950s, Alf explored the São Paulo scene, performing in nightclubs and influencing emerging talents. His return to Rio de Janeiro in 1962 saw him active in the epicentres of Bossa Nova, such as Bottle's Bar, where he performed alongside names like Tamba Trio and Sérgio Mendes. 'Diagonal' emerges in this effervescent scenario, reflecting the artistic maturity of a composer and performer who was already an inescapable reference for names like João Gilberto and Tom Jobim.
