Why This Album Matters
Johnny Alf is universally recognised as one of the seminal figures in the genesis of Bossa Nova, whose musical work paved harmonic and melodic paths for the genre. His compositions from the 1950s, such as "Céu e mar" and "Rapaz de bem", were pioneering, presenting a sophistication that broke with prevailing musical standards and anticipated the sound that would come to define Bossa Nova. Alf's genius lies in his ability to infuse Brazilian popular music with jazz elements and innovative harmonies, creating a distinct and engaging style. Considered a genius by many, Johnny Alf played a crucial part in the history of Brazilian music, even if public recognition was not always commensurate with his talent. His musical approach was revolutionary for the era, with melodies and harmonies that stood out for their originality and freshness.
Context
Before his consecration as one of the pillars of Bossa Nova, Johnny Alf had a musical trajectory that blended the erudite and the popular. He began his classical piano studies at the age of nine, but soon found himself attracted to North American popular music, absorbing influences from composers such as George Gershwin and Cole Porter, as well as film soundtracks. This eclectic background would be crucial for the development of his unique style. His entry into the professional scene occurred in 1952, when he was hired as a pianist at Cantina do César by Dick Farney and Nora Ney, a milestone that propelled his career and immersed him in the effervescent musical environment of the time. As early as 1949, Alf had joined the Sinatra-Farney Fan Club, demonstrating his affinity with the music that would inspire him.
Songs
Johnny Alf's songs are distinguished by melodic and harmonic innovation. The first 78 rpm record, which marked the beginning of his discography, featured the tracks "Falsete", written by him, and "De cigarro em cigarro", by Luís Bonfá. However, it was compositions such as "Céu e mar" and "Rapaz de bem", both from 1953, that became notable for their revolutionary musical approach, being widely recognised as precursors to the Bossa Nova style. Years later, the song "Eu e a brisa", despite being disqualified from the III Festival da Música Popular Brasileira in 1967, established itself as one of the biggest successes of his career, demonstrating the timelessness and lasting impact of his art. Other important songs, such as "O que é amar", were chosen by singers like Mary Gonçalves for their releases and, subsequently, became part of telenovela soundtracks.
Legacy
Johnny Alf's influence on Brazilian music is undeniable and deeply rooted in the history of Bossa Nova. He is widely recognised as one of the genre's founding fathers, with figures such as João Gilberto, Tom Jobim and Luiz Bonfá, amongst others, being directly influenced by his innovative work. Tom Jobim, in particular, expressed his admiration by nicknaming him 'Genialf', whilst journalist Ruy Castro consecrated him as the 'true father of Bossa Nova'. Despite, at times, not having received public recognition commensurate with his talent, as pointed out by curator Marcello Dantas, Alf's contribution was fundamental and endures. His importance was celebrated in exhibitions dedicated to Bossa Nova's 50th anniversary, where he had a virtual encounter with icons such as Tom Jobim, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, highlighting his prominent place in the pantheon of world music. The permanence of his compositions in the popular imagination is reinforced by their inclusion in soundtracks, such as that of the telenovela Anjo Mau, with the song "O que é amar", demonstrating the longevity and relevance of his legacy.
