Context
Before Delta Estácio Blues, Juçara Marçal already had a consolidated and diversified trajectory in Brazilian music. She is known for her work with the São Paulo-based group Metá Metá, as well as having been part of the groups A Barca and Vésper Vocal, and released solo projects such as the acclaimed Encarnado (2014) and Padê (2008), the latter in collaboration with Kiko Dinucci. The album was conceived and recorded during a period of great turbulence in Brazil, marked by an oppressive political climate and the COVID-19 pandemic. This scenario of pain and uncertainty permeates the work, which becomes an artistic and electric response to contemporary reality.
Recording
The musical production of Delta Estácio Blues was overseen by Kiko Dinucci, a long-time partner of Juçara Marçal and a member of Metá Metá. The creative process was marked by an experimental approach, inspired, in part, by rapper Danny Brown's method of composing lyrics over unpredictable rhythmic bases. Dinucci and Marçal began creating the album by building rhythmic and sparsely melodic foundations, using a noisy instrumentation that combines industrial elements, such as 808 beats, with Cadu Tenório's experimental sound design. A notable fact in the recording was the use of a Pocket Operator KO sampler, which randomly cut and reassembled song snippets, generating a cacophony effect and an 'error' aesthetic that enriches the album's complex sound. The mixing was carried out by Renato Godoy and mastering by Felipe Tichauer.

The eleven tracks of Delta Estácio Blues are an invitation to a dense lyrical and sonic universe, with Juçara Marçal's voice exploring new textures over intricate electronic bases. The title track, composed by Rodrigo Campos, Juçara Marçal and Kiko Dinucci, creates a fictional 'micro-story' about an encounter between legendary bluesman Robert Johnson and Rio sambistas Bide, Baiaco and Ismael Silva, symbolising the diasporic connection and cultural reinvention between Mississippi blues and Estácio samba. "Crash", with verses by rapper Rodrigo Ogi, is one of the album's highlights, described as a brutal and potent song that synthesises the experiences and concepts explored in the work, with frenetic synthesizers and samples that intertwine provocatively. Other notable compositions include "Sem Cais", co-written with Negro Leo, which addresses the chaos of social media and intolerance, and "Vi de Relance a Coroa", with arrangements and verses by Siba, which originates from a rural maracatu structure. The album also features collaborations with various artists on composition, such as Tulipa Ruiz ("Ladra"), Maria Beraldo ("Baleia") and Douglas Germano ("Corpus Christi"), expanding the richness and diversity of the repertoire.
Legacy
Delta Estácio Blues was received with widespread critical and public acclaim, being widely hailed as one of the most significant works of its release year. The album was honoured with the 'Best Album of 2021' award by APCA (Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte) and 'Album of the Year' by the Superjury of the Prêmio Multishow 2021. Individually, the song "Crash" was voted 'Song of the Year' at the Prêmio Multishow 2021, and its music video received the 'Innovation in Music Video Award' at the MVF Awards Brasil 2021. Kiko Dinucci was also recognised as 'Producer of the Year' at the Prêmio Multishow 2021 for his work on the album. The album also received a nomination for the 23rd Latin GRAMMY Awards in the 'Best Rock or Alternative Music Album in Portuguese Language' category. Its experimental sound and courageous approach to contemporary themes consolidated it as a landmark in Brazilian music production.
