Why This Album Matters

Encarnado, released in February 2014, is singer Juçara Marçal's first solo album and quickly established itself as a central reference point in the contemporary São Paulo scene. The album stands out for engaging viscerally and intimately with existential, social, and cultural issues, utilising a distinctive and innovative sound.

Context

Before releasing Encarnado, Juçara Marçal already possessed an established career in Brazilian music, as a singer for the group Metá Metá and having been a member of Vésper Vocal and A Barca. Her venture into solo work with Encarnado was perceived as a surprising debut and a move towards a risky and unexpected sound.

Recording

The unique sound of Encarnado is marked by the interplay between the guitars of Kiko Dinucci and Rodrigo Campos, who also formed the band that accompanied Juçara Marçal since the album's recording, alongside Thomas Rohrer on rabeca. Kiko Dinucci also produced the album.

Songs

The repertoire of Encarnado is predominantly marked by the theme of death, which, however, is explored as a quest for renewal and rebirth, a desire for 'new flesh'. Songs such as "O Velho Amarelo" and "Ciranda do Aborto" address finiteness and violence in a visceral manner. Juçara Marçal's voice becomes an instrument in itself, pervading the compositions, including on tracks such as "E o Quico?" by Itamar Assumpção, and "A Velha da Capa Preta" by Siba. The album presents a fusion of styles, with influences ranging from MPB and samba to jazz and math rock, and is notable for the absence of traditional percussion. The strings, wind instruments, and abrupt changes in melodies and tempo, heirs to math rock, efficiently fulfil the percussive role.

Legacy

Encarnado was very well received by critics, being considered one of the most audacious and authentic works in the recent Brazilian music scene. The album garnered various accolades, including the Prêmio Governador do Estado (Júri) for Best Album of 2014, the Prêmio APCA for Best Album of 2014, and the Prêmio Multishow de Música Compartilhada. The album is revered and became a central reference point in the contemporary São Paulo scene, solidifying Juçara Marçal's position as one of the most relevant and innovative artists in Brazilian music.
