Why This Album Matters

Acústico MTV: Kid Abelha is an album that solidified Kid Abelha's position as one of the most relevant bands in Brazilian pop rock. Released in 2002, this live acoustic work offered a new guise for an already acclaimed repertoire, revealing the timelessness of the Rio trio's compositions. The project was not just a retrospective of successes, but a celebration of the band's musicality and capacity for reinvention. By stripping their songs of electric arrangements, Paula Toller, George Israel and Bruno Fortunato exposed the melodic and lyrical essence that had always guided their trajectory, creating an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. The album succeeded in being a comprehensive overview of their career, moving between established hits and more recent material, demonstrating Kid Abelha's versatility and artistic depth.

Context

By 2002, Kid Abelha had already amassed over two decades of a career full of successes, establishing themselves as a 'hit factory' and a pillar of national pop-rock since their formation in the early 80s. After studio albums such as 'Surf' (2001), which flirted with electronic percussion, MTV's invitation to the 'Acústico' series came as an opportunity for the band to explore a more organic and mature sound, something that had already been prefigured with the semi-acoustic 'Meio Desligado' (1994). Besides being a milestone in the band's trajectory, the album carries a significant emotional component with the re-recording of "Quero Te Encontrar", by the duo Claudinho & Buchecha. The inclusion of the track served as a posthumous tribute to Claudinho, who had passed away in June of the same year, adding a layer of sensibility to the project.

Recording

Acústico MTV: Kid Abelha was recorded live at Pólo de Cine e Vídeo, in Rio de Janeiro, on 17 and 18 September 2002. The recording took place in the acclaimed 'Acústico MTV' series format, which proposes a more stripped-down and intimate approach for artists, utilising acoustic instruments and simplified arrangements, allowing for greater focus on performance and the quality of the compositions. The musical production of the album was handled by Paul Ralphes and George Israel, with rehearsals lasting six months. The band featured an expanded line-up, including Humberto Barros on piano and accordion, Kadu Menezes on drums, Rodrigo Santos on bass, as well as a horn section and additional percussion, enriching the sound without losing its acoustic essence.

Songs

The album offers a comprehensive overview of Kid Abelha's discography, blending major hits with more recent songs and three new tracks: "Nada Sei", "Meu Vício Agora" and "Gilmarley Song". Classics such as "No Seu Lugar", "Lágrimas e Chuva", "Grand'Hotel" and "Fixação" were given new interpretations, with refined arrangements that highlight their melodies and lyrics. Among the notable re-recordings, "Quero Te Encontrar" by funk artists Claudinho & Buchecha stands out as an emotional tribute. The reinterpretation of "Brasil", a hit by Cazuza, features a striking brass section and vocals by George Israel. A unique moment is the intimate version of "Os Outros", performed solely by Paula Toller and pianist Humberto Barros, showcasing the power of the voice and lyrics. The album also featured significant special guests: Lenine on "Na Rua, Na Chuva, Na Fazenda (Casinha de Sapê)" and Edgard Scandurra (Ira!) on "Como Eu Quero" and "Mudança de Comportamento", who added complementary textures and voices to the songs.

Legacy

Acústico MTV: Kid Abelha achieved tremendous commercial success in Brazil. It was the seventh best-selling album of 2002, earning a double platinum disc for over 500,000 copies sold at the time. Even more impressively, the album became the best-selling in the entire Acústico MTV series, surpassing the 2,000,000 copies mark and outperforming the previous record holder, Acústico MTV: Titãs, which had sold 1,800,000 copies. This achievement cemented its relevance not only in Kid Abelha's career, but also in the history of Brazilian music and the 'Acústico' format. Critical reception was also positive, with Rolling Stone Brasil magazine, in 2020, electing it as one of the 11 best Brazilian Acústicos MTV of all time.
