Why This Album Matters

Educação Sentimental is the second studio album by the acclaimed Brazilian band Kid Abelha e Os Abóboras Selvagens, released in 1985 by Warner Music. The album represents a landmark in the group's trajectory, consolidating its pop rock sound with a new wave touch and elevating it to stardom in the Brazilian music scene. The work stands out for a remarkable thematic evolution, transitioning from the adolescent issues addressed in the previous album to a more mature universe, exploring themes such as freedom, self-sufficiency, the rite of passage of leaving home, and the complex lessons about adult loves.

Context

The album was released in 1985, a year of profound effervescence in Brazil, marking the beginning of the New Republic and the end of more than two decades of military dictatorship. It was a period of intense social mobilisation and hope for redemocratisation, with José Sarney' taking office as president after the illness and death of Tancredo Neves, an event that symbolised the transition to a new political and social era in the country.

Recording

Produced by the renowned Liminha, an iconic figure in Brazilian music with an extensive curriculum that includes collaborations with Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil and Os Paralamas do Sucesso, the album's recording process suffered a delay of several months. This pause resulted from the band's preparation to participate in the first edition of Rock in Rio, a historic event held in January 1985 that inaugurated Brazil on the route of major music festivals. A striking detail in the production is that the arrangements and recording of the song "Lágrimas e Chuva" were carried out separately in Teresópolis, at George Israel's home, with its composition and title directly inspired by the monologue "Tears in Rain" from the film *Blade Runner*.

Songs

The album's title, Educação Sentimental, was a clear homage to Gustave Flaubert's eponymous novel, published in 1869, indicating the lyrical depth and sophistication the group sought. The album's songs delve into the complexities of adult youth's emotions and experiences, a contrast to the adolescent focus of their debut work. In addition to the classics "Lágrimas e Chuva" and "Garotos", the album featured hits such as "Educação Sentimental" (divided into Part I and II) and "Os Outros", the latter standing out for the melodic counterpoint of George Israel's saxophone. The repertoire also includes a re-recording of "A Fórmula do Amor", a song previously released as a single by Léo Jaime with Kid Abelha's participation, serving as an effective promotional tool for the album. Interestingly, "Educação Sentimental II" features an opening that, in an inspired way, harks back to The Clash's "London Calling", demonstrating the band's international influences.

Legacy

Despite selling around 200,000 copies and earning a Gold Record from the ABPD, the album initially faced a rather divided critical reception, with São Paulo newspapers going as far as to classify Kid Abelha, and Rio de Janeiro pop rock in general, as 'synonymous with rubbish'. However, over the years, Educação Sentimental was widely re-evaluated, and is now considered one of the great masterpieces of the 80s and ranks among the best albums of that period. Critics such as Richard Schott from Mondo Bacana pointed to it as 'the best of Kid Abelha's entire career', praising its musical, poetic and conceptual audacity. The 1001 Br website also highlighted the album's relevance, emphasising the tracks "Os Outros" and "Garotos". The work's relevance is such that it was listed by *Rolling Stone Brasil* as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums of all time. The album also marked Leoni's farewell from the band, one of its main composers, which significantly altered the group's creative dynamic in subsequent years.
