Context

The conception of São Paulo no Balanço do Choro in 1980 was preceded by a rich and diverse musical career of Laércio de Freitas. The artist began his international career in 1966, undertaking extensive tours across Europe, Asia, and Mexico. His international experience was complemented by his participation in prominent groups, such as Tamba 4, where he replaced Luiz Eça in the late 60s, having originated from the celebrated Tamba Trio. After returning to Brazil in 1971, Freitas joined Luiz Carlos Vinhas' group and demonstrated his talent as a composer with the song "Capim Gordura", which was a great success and was re-recorded by himself on his first solo LP, Laércio de Freitas e o som roceiro, in 1972. This foundation of experience and recognition paved the way for the creation of such an expressive authorial album as São Paulo no Balanço do Choro.
