Pajubá
Linn da Quebrada
2017

Why This Album Matters
Pajubá, the debut album by Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actress Linn da Quebrada, was independently released on 6 October 2017, establishing itself as a work of profound relevance and an artistic manifesto. Distributed on CD by Sentidos Produções and on vinyl by Fatiado Discos, the project, produced by BadSista, stands out for its vibrant sound, which explicitly transitions between Funk, Pop, MPB, and Trap. The sonic diversity is enriched by collaborations from talents such as Jup do Bairro, Pepita, Liniker, and Gloria Groove, who contribute to the album's unique texture. The album's title is a declaration in itself. Linn da Quebrada describes Pajubá as a "language of resistance, constructed from the insertion of words and expressions of West African origin", primarily used by travestis and the TLGB community. For the artist, the album is an act of naming, of constructing and inventing a language that challenges and resists, reflecting the essence of her own identity and message.
Context
Before the release of Pajubá, Linn da Quebrada had already gained recognition with singles such as "Enviadescer", "Talento", "Bixa Preta", and "Mulher", which were well received by both critics and the public. This success propelled the artist to undertake the Bixayra tour between 2016 and 2017, where, despite having only four officially released songs, she presented twelve unreleased original tracks to her audience. The materialisation of the album Pajubá involved remarkable fan engagement. To cover production costs, Linn da Quebrada launched a crowdfunding campaign, exceeding the desired target. This initiative not only made the project viable but also solidified the artist's connection with her fanbase, who actively supported the realisation of her debut work.
Recording
The production of Pajubá was a collaborative effort, financially supported by a successful crowdfunding campaign, which raised 49,000 reais, surpassing the established goal. The album featured BadSista's creative direction in production, along with contributions from Nelson D, Carlos NuneZ, Vincenzo, and Diego Sants, resulting in a sonic tapestry that integrates Funk, Pop, MPB, and Trap. The recordings were carried out at YB Music studios in August 2017. The project also benefited from the participation of other artists, such as Liniker, Pepita, and Gloria Groove, and stood out for the constant presence of Jup do Bairro, who sang with Linn on all tracks. During the fundraising campaign, the artist herself revealed the project's name, "Pajubá", which would become the hallmark of her language of resistance and invention.
Legacy
Pajubá was critically acclaimed, recognised as a powerful and essential work. Cleber Facchi, from the Miojo Indie website, awarded it an 8.6, praising how the album dialogues with Queer Rap, comparing it to artists such as Mykki Blanco and Le1f. Facchi described the work as "expository, strong, and necessary, as a direct response from the artist to the growing wave of conservatism and overt prejudice advancing across the country", highlighting tracks like "Transudo", "Dedo Nocué", "Bomba Pra Caralho", and "Talento". Lucas Cassoli, for Monkeybuzz, gave it an 8/10, stating that Pajubá is "a landmark as significant as Liniker's presence on Globo", and an important chapter in the history of the LGBT struggle and trans visibility. Renato Gonçalves, from Bravo! magazine, praised Linn, comparing her to Sade and emphasising the relevance of artists who question morality. The recognition extended to year-end best-of lists, with Pajubá taking the 9th position in "50 Melhores Discos Nacionais de 2017" by Tenho Mais Discos Que Amigos!, and the 10th position in the same category by Miojo Indie.
