Why This Album Matters

Cena de Cinema, released in 1982, marks Lobão's solo debut, an audacious and crucial step for the development of his solid career. The album stands out as an ambitious work, described as an '80s 'pearl' and one of Brazil's greatest albums. With a soundscape that transitions between a New Wave ambience and a diversity of styles, the album surprises with each track, keeping the listener engaged and curious. It was through this work that Lobão, until then known as a drummer, found and built his voice as a solo musician and singer, which makes it a fundamental milestone in his discography and in Brazilian music.

Context

The release of Cena de Cinema occurred in a period of significant transition in Lobão's career. He came from the success of the band Blitz, a group that played an essential role in the emergence and growth of 80s BRock. Lobão, however, was dissatisfied with the direction Blitz was taking and with the band's refusal to record his compositions. His decision to pursue a solo career, then, represented a rupture and the search for a more personal artistic expression, although he essentially considered himself a band musician and drummer.

Recording

The album Cena de Cinema was recorded in the summer of 1981, initially as a demo tape, in an eight-track Rio de Janeiro studio, in just seven days. The production was a true 'collaboration between friends', with the collaboration of various musicians from the Rio de Janeiro scene at the time. The backing band featured names such as Lulu Santos on guitars, Ritchie and Marina Lima on backing vocals, as well as Ricardo Barreto on guitar, Antonio Pedra on bass, and William Forghieri on keyboards. Marcelo Sussekind also participated, playing bass and acting as technician during the sessions. The recording costs were covered by Inácio Machado. A famous anecdote from the recording is Lobão expelling English drummer Jim Capaldi from the backing vocals of the title track.

Songs

Cena de Cinema is composed of ten songs, which showcase Lobão's compositional flair and multifaceted sound. The title track, "Cena de Cinema", is frequently cited as one of the album's best, being described as a rare pop song. Other standout songs include "Amor de Retrovisor", "Doce da Vida", the latter recognised for being one of Lobão's most sensitive and lyrical interpretations, and "Stopim", which some consider underrated. The lyrics, often in partnership with Bernardo Vilhena, already revealed Lobão's provocative writing style.

Legacy

After initially being aired in a rudimentary form as a demo tape on Fluminense FM, the album Cena de Cinema gained visibility and was acquired by RCA Victor, who pressed it on vinyl and K7 (cassette). Despite radio play for tracks such as the title track and "Doce da Vida", the LP sold only around 6,000 copies and went out of print shortly after its release. The poor commercial performance, coupled with a disagreement between Lobão and the RCA president at the time, resulted in the album being poorly distributed and quickly selling out. However, the album is today considered a 'cult' work by the artist himself and by critics, who revisit and recommend it as an '80s 'pearl'. Its vinyl edition became rare, and the 1991 CD version also quickly sold out.
