Ventura
Los Hermanos
2003

Why This Album Matters
Ventura, the third album by the Rio de Janeiro band Los Hermanos, released in 2003, marks a crucial turning point in the group's trajectory and in contemporary Brazilian music. Moving away from the more ska-punk and alternative rock sound of their previous works, the album delves into a more sophisticated and matured sound, incorporating elements of MPB, samba, and bossa nova into rock with indie and art rock influences. This work represents the consolidation of the band's complex and melancholic musical identity, with well-crafted arrangements and clean production that favours stylistic diversity. The gentle melodies, yet with profound emotional impact, and the introspective and poetic lyrics addressing themes such as love, existentialism, and the passage of time, give Ventura a timeless quality. It is an album that balances melancholy and lightness, reflecting on the complexities of human relationships and the nuances of life, becoming a benchmark of sophistication and an essential piece for understanding the evolution of rock and MPB in the 2000s.
The quartet glides effortlessly through a universe all its own, amidst precise descriptions of middle-class daily life and memorable melodies.

Context
Before the release of Ventura, Los Hermanos had already embarked on a path of sonic evolution. Following the success of their self-titled debut album in 1999, boosted by the hit "Anna Julia", the band surprised the public with Bloco do Eu Sozinho in 2001, which already indicated a move away from early hardcore towards a richer blend of rock and Brazilian rhythms. Ventura solidified this transition, with the group's sound even more influenced by samba, choro, and bossa nova. The album's release process faced setbacks: with Ventura already complete, the record label Abril Music declared bankruptcy at the end of 2002. Despite offers from independent labels, the band accepted BMG's proposal, which acquired part of Abril's catalogue and signed Los Hermanos. Furthermore, Ventura gained notoriety for being the first work by a Brazilian band to be illegally made available on the internet before its official release, a fact that marked the era.
Recording
The pre-production of Ventura took place at Sítio Remanso, in Petrópolis, between 15 October and 13 December 2002. The official recording took place at Monoaural studio, between 20 January and 23 February 2003, followed by mixing at A.R. studio from 24 February to 9 March of the same year. Mastering was carried out at Classic Master on 27 and 28 March 2003. The album's production was handled by Kassin, a name known for his refined work in MPB, which contributed to the polished and intricate sound of the record. Fabiano França was responsible for recording and mixing, while Carlos Freitas handled the mastering. The behind-the-scenes production was documented by MTV Brasil in a film called "Além Do Que Se Vê", released in 2004 and subsequently made available on the band's YouTube channel.
Songs
Ventura features 15 tracks, alternating between compositions by Marcelo Camelo and Rodrigo Amarante, solidifying a creative partnership that would become the band's trademark. Songs like "Samba a Dois", which opens the album with immortalised verses about the essence of samba, and the single "O Vencedor", highlight the creative genius and the group's ability to blend genres. Other notable tracks include "Último Romance" and "O Velho e o Moço", which illustrate the lyrical depth and bold arrangements, transitioning between alternative rock, MPB, and bossa nova. The lyrics explore profound themes, such as love, the passage of time, the search for purpose, and existential dilemmas, with a poetic approach that balances melancholy and lightness. The track "Conversa de Botas Batidas" is particularly intriguing, based on a tragic accident in Rio de Janeiro. The album is notable for many of its songs avoiding the traditional chorus structure, a trait of sonic maturity initiated in Bloco do Eu Sozinho.

To cement their fame, perhaps the smash hit 'Anna Júlia' (1999) would have been enough, later even re-recorded by the English Jim Capaldi, ex-Traffic. Or perhaps the ska-hardcore carnival of their second album, Bloco do eu sozinho (2001), would have sufficed.

Legacy
Ventura achieved iconic status in Brazilian music, recognised for its quality and cultural impact. It was considered by Rolling Stone Brasil as the 68th greatest Brazilian album of all time. In September 2012, in a popular vote organised by Rádio Eldorado FM, the Estadao.com portal, and Caderno C2+Música, it was elected the best Brazilian album in history. The album was certified gold by the Brazilian Association of Record Producers (ABPD) after selling over 50,000 copies. Its relevance extends to projects such as "Ventura Sinfônico", where the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra (Opes) performs concerts with the album's repertoire, having even released a double CD and DVD edition in 2017. Ventura not only consolidated Los Hermanos on the national scene, but also influenced a generation of musicians and listeners, becoming a seminal work for its sophistication and timelessness.

Ventura – The 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music
Alexandre Matias · Rolling Stone Brasil
