Why This Album Matters

Released in 1995, Raças Brasil is a pivotal album in the discography of Luiz Carlos da Vila, one of the greatest composers and sambistas in Brazilian music. This work stands out as a vibrant celebration of Brazilian cultural diversity and, emphatically, of the essential contribution of African heritage to national identity. Through sambas that are both poetic and engaged, the album transcends mere musicality to become a cultural manifesto. The musical style of Raças Brasil is samba in its purest, most conscious essence, laden with enveloping melodies and lyrics that invite reflection. Luiz Carlos da Vila, with his characteristic mastery, uses the genre's strength to weave narratives about the formation of the Brazilian people, miscegenation, and the importance of samba as a unifying element for Brazil's diverse ethnic groups. The title track, "Raças Brasil", synthesises this proposal by affirming samba's ability to "embrace the sum of Brazil's races". The album deserves particular attention for its thematic and artistic relevance, representing a landmark in the work of an artist who always knew how to combine melodic beauty with lyrical depth. It is a work that resonates the soul of Brazil, inviting the listener to immerse themselves in the richness of its culture and history, especially Afro-Brazilian history.

Context

Luiz Carlos da Vila was already an established name in the samba scene when he released Raças Brasil. Born in the Ramos neighbourhood of Rio, he adopted the artistic name "da Vila" after joining the composers' wing of Unidos de Vila Isabel in 1977. A regular at the legendary pagode roda of Cacique de Ramos in the late 1970s, Luiz Carlos da Vila was one of the key shapers of contemporary Carioca samba, alongside a talented generation that included Jorge Aragão, Arlindo Cruz, Zeca Pagodinho, and Sombrinha. Before Raças Brasil, the sambista had already released other solo works and had countless hits recorded by major MPB artists, such as Beth Carvalho and Martinho da Vila, which attested to his genius as a composer and the depth of his work.

Recording

Originally released in 1995 by the Velas label, Raças Brasil is Luiz Carlos da Vila's fourth solo album. The album's production was handled by Katsunori Tanaka, and the recordings were made at EMI-Odeon Studios in Rio de Janeiro. The album credits reveal the participation of renowned instrumentalists, such as Rafael Rabello on the 7-string guitar, which ensured the richness and instrumental sophistication characteristic of high-quality samba. The percussion featured Eliseu, Luna, Marcos Suzano, and Marçal, important names for the cadence and swing of samba. Henrique Cazes penned the album's liner notes.

Songs

The Raças Brasil album comprises twelve tracks that intertwine to present a panorama of Luiz Carlos da Vila's samba, with lyrics that explore social and romantic themes, and, notably, Afro-Brazilian identity. Among the highlights are "A Luz do Vencedor" and the emblematic samba-enredo "Kizomba, Festa da Raça", which appears in a medley with "Nas Veias do Brasil". "Kizomba, a Festa da Raça", in particular, is a powerful celebration of African ancestry and the unity of Black peoples. The song references important historical figures of Black resistance, such as Zumbi dos Palmares, and exalts cultural manifestations like jongo and maracatu, connecting the struggle against racism in Brazil to a global context. The title track, "Raças Brasil", co-written with Carlos Sena, also reiterates the thesis of Brazil's miscegenated formation and samba's agglutinating capacity. The album's repertoire features several partnerships, including "Um Samba Pra Lili / Sem Endereço" with Arlindo Cruz and Jane, "Além da Razão" with Sombra and Sombrinha, and "Carvão e Giz" with Paulo César Feital, evidencing Luiz Carlos da Vila's ability to collaborate with other great names in samba composition.

Legacy

The importance of Raças Brasil in the MPB scene was re-affirmed with the album's re-issue by Rob Digital, ensuring the work remained accessible to new generations of listeners. Although some of Luiz Carlos da Vila's most celebrated songs had already gained recognition before the release of this album, their inclusion in Raças Brasil solidified their place as essential repertoire. For instance, "Kizomba, a Festa da Raça", though present on the 1995 album, was the samba-enredo that led Unidos de Vila Isabel to the championship in 1988, demonstrating the cultural impact and relevance of his compositions. Similarly, "Além da Razão", co-written with Sombra and Sombrinha, received the Sharp Award for Best Samba in 1988 with Beth Carvalho's interpretation. The legacy of Luiz Carlos da Vila, and by extension of Raças Brasil, is that of an artist who not only created sambas of great beauty, but who also used them as a means to express and value Afro-Brazilian history and culture, leaving an indelible mark on samba and Brazilian music.
